Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The league-leading Winnipeg Goldeyes dropped the middle game of a three-game set to the Gary SouthShore RailCats tonight, falling 14-4 before a crowd of 6,344 at Canwest Park.
Winnipeg opened the scoring off Chris Jones in the second. With Cory Patton on second with a lead-off double, Adam Frost put down a sacrifice bunt that Mike Rohde fielded cleanly at third, but his throw pulled Jeff Beachum off first and both runners were safe. Jeff DeSmidt followed with a double to right and it was 2-0.
Held to just one hit through three, the RailCats took the lead off Ace Walker in the fourth. After hitting Chris Carrara to start the inning and giving up a single to Eric McNamee, Walker served up Steve Haake's team-leading seventh home run of the season that made it 3-2. But the hosts came right back. DeSmidt singled with one out and came all the way around to score on a Josh Asanovich double. It didn't stay tied for long.
Brett Wallace led off the fifth with his first home run of the year. Rob Marconi singled, stole second and scored on a single by Mike Massaro, who went to second on the throw home. Massaro was sacrificed to third by Carrara and attempted to tag up and score on an Eric McNamee fly ball to centre, but Patton's throw home was on the money and Massaro was out.
It became 6-3 in the seventh. Rohde reached on an error by first baseman Cody Ehlers and went to third on a Wallace single. With one out, Massaro was intentionally walked to load the bases for Carrara, who walked to drive in Rohde. McNamee followed with a fly ball to right. Wallace attempted to tag up and score, but Kevin West's throw home was on the money and Wallace was out. Winnipeg got one back in the bottom of the inning. Brent Metheny singled, stole second and scored on a two-out single by Juan Diaz.
With Zach Baldwin in for Walker, the RailCats made it 7-4 in the eighth. Jordan Czarniecki singled with one out and scored when Beachum drilled a double down the left field line. Gary concluded the scoring with seven runs in the ninth. Marconi reached and went to second on a Metheny error, went to third on a Massaro single and scored on a Carrara single. McNamee walked, Haake struck out and Czarniecki walked to score Massaro. Beachum reached on an error by Frost that scored Carrara and that was it for Baldwin, who made way for Patton. Rohde singled to score McNamee, Wallace popped out and Marconi singled to score Czarniecki and Beachum. Massaro followed with a grounder that Asanovich booted at second and Rohde scored to make it a 14-4 final.
Jones (2-1) got the win, allowing all four runs (three earned) on nine hits in seven innings, walking one and striking out five. Walker (5-2) took the loss after getting stung for six runs (five earned) on seven hits in seven innings, walking two and fanning three.
