Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The league-leading Winnipeg Goldeyes dropped the marathon opener of a three-game set to the Gary SouthShore RailCats tonight, falling 5-3 in 15 innings before a crowd of 6,587 at Canwest Park.
Winnipeg opened the scoring off Tony Cogan in the fourth when Juan Diaz led off with his seventh home run of the year. Gary squared it in the sixth off Andrew Cruse. Rob Marconi singled to lead it off, stole second and scored on an Eric McNamee double. The visitors took the lead in the seventh. With Derek Feldkamp in for Cruse, Cristian Guerrero singled to start the inning and went to third on a Mike Rohde single. After pinch-runner Jeff Beachum replaced Guerrero, Anthony Esquer walked to load the bases and send Feldkamp to the showers.
Zach Baldwin came in and gave up a sacrifice fly to Marconi that scored Beachum and send Rohde to third, from where he scored on a perfectly-executed suicide squeeze by Mike Massaro. Blanked since the Diaz home run, the Goldeyes tied it in the eighth. After Kyle Hehne recorded the first out, Onan Masaoka came in and walked Brent Metheny. Aaron Cook replaced Masaoka and gave up singles to Kevin West and Diaz, the latter scoring Metheny. Cody Ehlers followed with a single to score West and it was a tie game. Things stayed that way until the fifteenth.
Steve Haake drew a lead-off walk from Chris Homer and scored on Jordan Czarniecki's second double of the night. Czarniecki was sacrificed to third by Jeff Beachum and scored on a two-out single by Brett Wallace.
Clint Goocher (1-0) got the win after tossing two shutout innings, allowing one hit while fanning two and walking one. Homer (0-1) took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in three innings with a strikeout and two walks. Garret Holleran tossed a shutout fifteenth for his first save.
