
RailCats Win Back and Forth Affair 5-4

SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Gary South Shore RailCats won a back and forth affair Tuesday night in Sioux Falls beating the Canaries 5-4. Both teams got busy early with the RailCats taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Adam Taylor walked to start the inning and went to third on a single from Josh Romanski facing starter Ben Moore (ND). Wally Backman picked up his 3rd RBI with a ground ball to first that scored Taylor.
Sioux Falls joined in the home half of the first when Chris Valencia and Carlos Mendez singled back to back off of RailCats starter Dustin Crenshaw (ND). Brandon Jones tied it with an RBI single and Chase Burch drove home the go ahead with a sac fly to right and it was 2-1 Sioux Falls.
The RailCats tied the game in the top of the fourth with Wally Backman leading off the inning with a single then came home on a single from Justin Gominsky his first RBI as a RailCat to tie the game off of Moore.
Dustin Crenshaw was in command after the second. After the Canaries saw their first two reach in the form of Stephen Branca and Steve Tinoco the RailCats right hander retired the next 10 batters he faced until the fifth. Sioux Falls would touch Crenshaw for another run in the sixth with a solo homerun from Chase Burch to take the lead at 3-2.
The RailCats came right back in the top of the seventh getting a pinch hit triple from Drew Martinez that scored Zac Mitchell and another RBI from Danny Pulfer on a single off of Kaohi Dowing who came in for the Canaries with one out in the seventh. The RailCats had the lead once again going to the bottom of the seventh 4-3.
Sioux Falls would not go away and would tie it in the home half of the seventh when Mike Weatherly came in for the RailCats and walked the leadoff man Kevin Dultz. A wild pitch moved Dultz to second and following a sac bunt by Ty Forney the RailCats brought in Kagen Hopkins to face Chris Valencia. Valencia hit a fly ball to right to bring home Dultz and the game was tied once again at four.
The RailCats would take the lead back in the eighth when Wally Backman lead off with a double and moved to second on a ground ball to second by Craig Maddox. Justin Gominsky would strike out against Dowing but Jeremey Hamilton hit a two out RBI single to give the RailCats the lead scoring Backman from third to make it 5-4.
Kagen Hopkins (1-1) worked a scoreless eighth inning and faced two batters in the ninth before Kevin Brahney came in to face Chris Valencia in a lefty lefty matchup to earn the save. Hopkins went 2.1 in the relief effort for the RailCats.
The RailCats finish the road trip at 3-3 and following an off day now come home for a seven game home stand that begins Thursday night at 7:10pm against the Wichita Wingnuts.
