Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

A nightmare third inning led to a nightmare afternoon for the Winnipeg Goldeyes.

Starting pitcher Jason Jarvis got knocked around for nine runs in the third inning on Wednesday, as the Goldeyes (4-3) were thumped 18-5 by the Laredo Lemurs (4-3) before 1,909 fans at Uni-Trade Stadium.

Winnipeg dropped the three-game series 2-1 with the loss.

In their first day game of the season, the Goldeyes found themselves with an insurmountable deficit after the first eight Lemurs had hits in the bottom of the third, including home runs from Travis Denker and Angel Flores. The barrage chased Jarvis from the game after 2 2/3 innings.

The Goldeyes tried to claw back with two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth on a two-RBI single from second baseman Jake Blackwood.

However, Laredo scored singles in the fifth and sixth innings, two more in the seventh and five runs in the eighth.

Winnipeg's only other run came in the seventh inning when third baseman Ryan Pineda led off with a triple and then scored on a ground out by catcher Jordan Guida.

The Goldeyes committed six errors in the game, which tied a team record from 2002 and led to four Laredo runs.

Winnipeg's pitching staff issued a season-high seven walks.

Jarvis' record falls to 1-1 with the loss, while Mike Piazza picked up the win for Laredo.

Pineda had three hits and two runs to lead Winnipeg at the plate.

The Goldeyes have an off day tomorrow before starting a three-game series at Haymarket Park against the Lincoln Saltdogs on Friday. Matt Jackson (1-0, 0.00) is expected to take the ball for Winnipeg against Nick Green (0-0, 0.00) for the Saltdogs. The series concludes Winnipeg's 10-game season-opening road trip.

Tickets for all 2014 Winnipeg Goldeyes games are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
