Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Gary, Ind.: Jermaine Allensworth collected three hits including two doubles and Tanner Townsend drilled a three-run pinch hit double as the Gary SouthShore RailCats defeated the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 10-5. The game marked the first meeting at U. S. Steel Yard between the two clubs since the RailCats topped the RedHawks in the Northern League Championship Series last September, and it was the first-ever regular season home win for Gary over Fargo-Moorhead after 11 losses from 2003-'05.

After Fargo-Moorhead scored once in the first, Gary came back to take the lead for good in the bottom of the inning. Jay Pecci doubled to left, went to third on Allensworth's bunt single, and scored on Steve Haake's ground ball to first that was mishandled by Jesse Hoorelbeke for an error. Allensworth came around to score on Brad Vericker's ground out to second to make it 2-1.

The RailCats added three more runs in the second, loading the bases with no outs on a pair of walks to Steve Booth and Alex Taylor and a bunt single to Eric McNamee. Pecci's sacrifice fly brought in Booth, a wild pitch brought in Taylor, and and Allensworth's double brought in McNamee to make it 5-1.

Fargo-Moorhead's Brent Krause drilled a home run to right in the third to make it 5-2, but the RailCats came back in the fourth to score again when RedHawks starter Brandon Culp hit Andy Rohleder with a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 6-2.

Richard Austin hit a three-run home run in the fifth off RailCats starter Jason Shelley to make it 6-5, but Shelley and relievers Kris Regas and Travis Kerber combined to shutout the RedHawks the rest of the night.

Leading by one run in the bottom of the eighth, Gary's Steve Haake connected on a two-out solo home run, his second of the year, but make it 7-5. Three batters later, Townsend drilled a double to left center with the bases loaded to drive in three and give the RailCats a comfortable 10-5 lead.

Shelley (4-2) pitched into the sixth inning to earn his fourth straight win. Kerber recorded the final five outs for his fifth save. Culp (2-3) allowed six runs over four innings, walking six, to take the loss.

The two clubs meet again Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at U. S. Steel Yard. Sazi Guthrie (0-0, 2.25) will make his second start for Gary. Mark Michael (4-0, 1.32) will start for Fargo-Moorhead. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a RailCats picture pack featuring Eric McNamee, Alex Taylor, Travis Kerber, and Steve Booth, courtesy of Great Lakes Orthopedics.

Notes: Gary's win snapped Fargo-Moorhead's four game winning streak...The RailCats are 11-5 when their starting pitcher goes at least five innings; 2-12 when he goes less than five...Fargo-Moorhead center fielder Joe Mathis kept the game close in the fourth inning with a sensational diving catch of Steve Booth's deep drive with the bases loaded to end the inning.
