Flyers jump out early then hang on to nail biter

June 19, 2006 - Northern League (NL)
Schaumburg Flyers News Release

On a night when most Edmonton fans were watching their Oilers lose Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals, the Flyers and Cracker-Cats were playing good game at TELUS Field. The Flyers would eventually hold on to win a 7-6 game in front of 693 fans in a time of 2 hours and 20 minutes.

The Flyers jumped out to the early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Chris Weekly, who had a big night at the plate, doubled in Nelson Gord for the first run of the game. Eric Cole then followed with a ground ball to the third baseman Dan Chappel. Chappel would go on to throw the ball into the stand beyond first base, allowing Weekly to score the second run of the inning.

The Cracker-Cats would then tie the score in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run homerun hit by Jeremy Ware, the ball was hit off of Flyer starter Rick DeHart.

The Flyers were able to respond in the top of the third inning however, by scoring four runs and taking a lead that they would never give back. Geoff McCallum lead off the inning by taking a hit-by-pitch, Gord then followed with a bunt single which would put two runners on for Weekly. Weekly would proceed to take the 2-0 pitch out of the ballpark over the right field wall for a three-run homerun, his fourth of the year. After Cole and Josue Lopez fouled out, Ben Van Iderstine tripled into center field only to be followed by an RBI double by Jarrod Patterson making the score 6-2 heading into the bottom of the third.

Both teams would add one more run to their run total heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Cracker-Cats made things interesting.

With two outs and Greg Morrison on second base, things seemed to unwravel for DeHart out on the mound. Ware was able to work a walk, with Chappel coming to the plate with runners on first and second base. On a full count pitch, Chappel would double down the right field line driving in two runs. Ryan Hanson would then single Chappel home, bringing Edmonton within one run, 7-6. DeHart was able to get lead off man Aharon Eggleston to pop out to third baseman Patterson to get out of the inning, Flyers still leading by one.

One run was good enough for the Flyers bullpen as Chris Andel, Dan Jackson, and Nate Cotton would come in to work the last three innings of the game, giving up two hits and no runs. Cotton worked a perfect bottom of the ninth to pick up his eighth save of the year and also earning DeHart his third win of the season as the Flyers would go on to win 7-6, taking the first game of the three game series with Edmonton.

The Flyers and the Cracker-Cats will face off again tomorrow, June 20, at 7:05 for the second game of the series. The Flyers will be going for their fourth win in a row and 21st win of the season.
