RailCats Take Down the X's 5-3

SIOUX CITY, IA-The Gary South Shore RailCats used a great start by Morgan Coombs and some timely hitting to beat Sioux City 5-3 Monday night at Lewis and Clark Stadium. The RailCats took the lead in the top of the third when Cody Bishop drew a leadoff walk off of Sioux City starter Kohei Tsukada (1-1) and was followed by Danny Pulfer who singled to right. Bishop stole third and came home on an wide throw down the left field line by catcher Dillon Usiak to give the RailCats the lead at 1-0. Tsukada then retired the next two batters before Craig Maddox hit a double off the wall in deep right to make it 2-0.

In the fourth the RailCats RBI leaders Danny Pulfer and Drew Martinez each picked up their 14th team leading RBI. Jeremy Hamilton led off with a single then Adam Taylor walked to put runners at first and second. Zac Mitchell was retired on a hard smash at first for out number one. Cody Bishop then reached on a fielder's choice on a ball that first baseman Luke Murton threw toward second and hit Taylor the runner for Gary loading the bases. Pulfer then brought home the third run of the game with a sac fly to right then on cue Martinez followed with an RBI single to make it 4-0 RailCats.

Morgan Coombs (2-1) went 6.2 to get the win for the RailCats. The former Ball State Cardinal scattered four hits with one earned run notching the clubs 11th quality start. Coombs gave up a one out double to Renee Tonsoni in the seventh that scored Tom Mendonca before he exited the game for Kaegan Hopkins. The RailCats added another run in the eighth on an Adam Taylor fielder's choice that second baseman Andres Perez made and error on allowing a run to score and to foil a double play opportunity.

Hopkins was able to keep the X's off the board until he ran into trouble in the 9th. The game was not in the books until Chuck Fontana came in with a runner at first and the tying run at the plate. The lefty struck out pinch hitter Todd Jennings and Michael Lang to notch his second save.

Game two of the three game series will be Tuesday night at 7:05pm with RHP Dustin Crenshaw (0-1, 2.35) going for Gary and RHP Ryan Mitchell (0-3, 7.36) for Sioux City. The game can be heard on WEFM 95.9 and online at RailCatsbaseball.com.
