Wichita Wingnuts News Release

KANSAS CITY, KS (June 2, 2014) - The Wichita Wingnuts have a number of hitters in their everyday lineup that have the ability to hit any given pitch a long way. However, the value of laying off of pitches that do not enter the strike zone cannot be understated. A combination of the two, seven extra base hits and 11 walks, allowed Wichita to roll to an easy 11-2 win over the Kansas City T-Bones on Monday night at Community America Ballpark.

The walk parade began in the very first inning when T-Bones' starter Pat Doyle (1-2) issued three free passes. Ryan Khoury began the game by drawing one and then after Carlo Testa followed with a single, Doyle couldn't find the strike zone to either Brent Clevlen or Chris McMurray and forced home a run.

In the next inning it was both the free bases and the bats that put a crooked number on the board. David Amberson led off with a walk and then advanced to second and third on a pair of wild pitches. Testa singled him home and then proceeded to steal second and third on consecutive Doyle pitches. After Jake Kahaulelio walked, Clevlen smacked a double to left-center field that scored both and made it 4-0.

In Doyle's last inning, the fifth, the Wingnuts tacked on an unearned run to his line before he departed. Colt Loehrs reached on an infield single and advanced to second on an errant throw from shortstop Vladimir Frias. That put him in scoring position for the newest Wingnut, Chris McClendon, who was acquired earlier in the day. McClendon slapped a ball through the infield to grab a 5-0 lead and record his first RBI with Wichita.

While this was going on in the top half of various innings, Wingnuts' starter Justin Klipp (3-0) was working his way efficiently through the bottom halves. He escaped the few jams the T-Bones (8-10) put him in on his way to working 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing six hits, and striking out seven.

Wichita (14-5) added two more in the seventh inning on a couple more bases loaded walks, one by Kristhiam Linares and the other by Zach Fowler, to push the lead to 7-0. In the eighth, a McMurray double brought home Clevlen to add one more to the advantage. In the bottom of the same inning Kansas City reached the scoreboard for the only time when, with two on and two out, Carlo Testa dropped a ball near the warning track allowing both runners to score.

In the top of the ninth Testa made up for his defensive miscue by driving in a run prior to Kahaulelio crushing a fastball to left field for a two-run homer and extending the margin to 11-2.

Seven of the nine hitters in Wichita's lineup drove in a run, while Testa, Clevlen, Kahaulelio, and McMurray each had two. Testa was 3-6 and Clevlen and McMurray both had multiple extra-base knocks.

Left-hander Alan Williams will make the start for the Wingnuts on Tuesday night against left-handed pitcher Rick Zagone of Kansas City. The game begins at 7:05 p.m. with the pre-game show starting at 6:50 on 92.7 KWME or by choosing the "Listen Live" option on wichitawingnuts.com.
