Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The Gary SouthShore RailCats were swept by the Sioux City Explorers on Sunday night as the X's rallied for a 5-4 victory in the series finale.

The RailCats jumped out of the gates, plating three runs in the top of the first to open the scoring for the first time in the series. Adam Klein opened the game by singling following an 11 pitch at bat against Sioux City starter Nick Schumacher. Mike Massaro followed with a walk. Cristian Guerrero loaded the bases with an opposite field single to right. Toddric Johnson plated the first two runs of the night with an opposite field single to left. Kyle Haines followed with the fourth hit of the inning, a single through the right side, to score the final run.

Sioux City sliced into the advantage in the bottom of the first. Dustin Jones worked a walk to open the contest and scored from second on a two-out double off the bat of Kent Sakamoto. The Explorers scrapped to within 3-2 in the fourth. Ray Serrano led off with a double and scored on a two-out RBI single from Ryan Priddy.

Brad Boyer extended the lead to 4-2 with an RBI single in the top of the fifth to score Klein. The Explorers, who posted their fifth straight win over the RailCats and matched their longest win streak with their fourth in a row, tied the game in the sixth. Priddy lined a single to left allowing a run to score and an errant throw allowed the tying run to cross. Sakamoto greeted Chris Little, who was activated from the DL before the game with Alain Quijano being placed on the DL, with a double to right in the bottom of the eighth, moved to third on a sacrifice, and scored the winner on a sacrifice fly from T.J. Bohn, just beating the throw to the plate.

Carlos Rivas allowed four runs in 5.1 innings, striking out four in a no-decision. Reliever Brian Grening struck out the side in the eighth. The RailCats, who had never been swept this season, posted 11 hits in the contest as Klein, Boyer, and Guerrero, registered two apiece.

The RailCats head to Canada to begin a three-game series with the Winnipeg Goldeyes, co-leaders of the North, on Monday at 6:00 p.m. RHP Scott Shaw (7-3, 4.78) toes the rubber for the RailCats, who look to avoid their first four-game losing streak of the year. LHP Isaac Hess (4-2, 4.66) starts for Winnipeg.

The RailCats return home for a brief three-game series against former Northern League friends the Kansas City T-Bones on Friday, August 5 for a 7:10 p.m. game featuring plenty of activities at U. S. Steel Yard including post-game fireworks, postgame music in the Diamond Club, and Greek Night and a Negro League Celebration. For tickets call (219) 882-2255 or visit railcatsbaseball.com.
