Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY â The Gary SouthShore RailCats (Northern League) today announced a series of player transactions:
-- The RailCats signed right-handed pitcher Byron Embry to a 2003 contract.
-- The RailCats put catcher Kevin Wittmeyer on waivers for the purpose of giving Wittmeyer his unconditional release. Wittmeyer batted .188 in 65 games with the RailCats last season.
EMBRY, 26, is a three-year Northern League veteran. In 2002, Embry went 1-3, 3.17 ERA, 1 save in 43 relief appearances for the RailCats, striking out 65 batters in 59 2/3 innings of work.
The RailCats obtained Embry in a trade from Fargo-Moorhead on April 27, 2002. Embry had been signed by Fargo-Moorhead on January 23, 2002 after spending 2001 with the Lincoln Saltdogs. Embry appeared in just 11 games in 2001 before undergoing surgery in late June to remove bone spurs from his elbow, an injury that cost him the rest of the season. In 2000, Embry posted a 2-3 record with a 4.45 ERA and three saves for the New Jersey Jackals of the Northern League East.
Originally drafted by the Atlanta Braves organization in 1996 as a draft-and-follow out of Indian Hills (Iowa) C.C., Embry has averaged more than a strikeout per inning pitched throughout his six-year professional career. Embry was a member of the 1999 Carolina League co-champion Myrtle Beach Pelicans.
The Gary SouthShore RailCats are the new, professional minor league baseball team serving northwest Indiana and Chicago's south suburbs. The RailCats play their inaugural home opener at RailCats Stadium on Memorial Day, May 26. RailCats spring training begins May 9. A complete RailCats game schedule can be viewed on the RailCats website â www.railcatsbaseball.com.
