Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Gary, IN - Cristian Guerrero's third inning single through the right side scored the only run of the night as the RailCats (37-26) took home a 1-0 win over Sioux City (24-39) on Tuesday night.

It was the second time this season the RailCats defeated Sioux City by a 1-0 score.

Billy Spottiswood picked up his third win of the year; he delivered seven and a third innings of scoreless baseball. Spottiswood allowed eight hits and one walk and struck out two in his longest start of the season.

The only offense in the game came in the bottom of the third. Zac Mitchell led off the inning with a single and stole second base; he moved to third on a sacrifice by Danny Pulfer. Adam Klein then drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Mike Massaro then attempted to drag bunt his way on and first baseman Austin Gallagher threw home to get Mitchell attempting to score.

With two out, Cristian Guerrero rolled a base hit through the right side to score Adam Klein from second to take a 1-0 lead for the RailCats.

Dan Jurik was the tough luck loser as he suffered his eighth loss of the season. Jurik, for the fourth time this year, was shutout by an opponent. He went seven innings and allowed one run on four hits and four walks.

Both teams had a bevy of opportunities for more offense throughout the game. Spottiswood worked out of trouble in the fourth when Sioux City had runners at first and second but forced a double play ball with one out to end the threat.

In the fifth, the Explorers got a leadoff double from Bryan Pounds, but again Spottiswood worked out of the jam; this time with a pair of groundouts and a strikeout.

Then one more time in the top of the seventh, Spottiswood was in a difficult situation with runners at first and second and one out. He avoided any offensive damage by getting Eddie Young and Eliezer Mesa to end the inning.

In the eighth, Spottiswood was removed from the game after a leadoff single by Leugim Barrosa and a sacrifice to second. The RailCats 'pen was called on to end the threat with Estevan Uriegas and Ian Durham retiring a batter each to keep it 1-0 RailCats.

Sioux City stranded runners in scoring position in six different innings. The RailCats stranded nine in the game, including a runner in scoring position in each of their final three at-bats.

The RailCats continue their four game set with Sioux City on Wednesday night. LHP Alain Quijano (8-4, 3.88 ERA) will start for the RailCats, the Explorers will send RHP Jason Jarvis (5-5, 3.29 ERA). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.

One lucky fan will have a chance to take three swings to hit a home run and if that lucky fan does hit it out of the park they'll win $10,000 in the RailCats July JACK-pot. For more information on July JACK-pot, call (219) 882-2255.
