Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Gary, Ind.—The Gary SouthShore RailCats used 26 of their 27 available outs to score a run on Wednesday, but that was enough to defeat the Edmonton Cracker-Cats 1-0 at U. S. Steel Yard before a crowd of 3,331. The win lifted the RailCats to 3-3 on the season.

The RailCats came to bat in the bottom of the ninth inning in a scoreless tie. Steve Haake (pronounced HOCK-ey) led off with a double down the right field line to put the winning run in scoring position. Alex Taylor was walked intentionally, and Scott Samuels drew a walk to load the bases with no one out.

Edmonton reliever Trey Poland struck out Jay Pecci for the first out of the inning, but Curt Lee delivered a ground ball up the middle that was fielded with a diving stop by Edmonton second baseman Chris Becker. Becker could only flip to second for the force on Samuels as Haake scored to end the game.

For the second time in the series, RailCats pitchers limited the Cracker-Cats to just two hits. Edmonton had singles in the first and second innings to account for their hit total for the day and they did not have a base runner after the fifth inning.

RailCats reliever Derek Lopez (1-0) pitched the final two innings for the win. Starting pitcher Jamie Bennett worked the first six frames and Travis Kerber pitched a perfect seventh.

The two clubs close out the four game set on Thursday at 7:00 PM as the RailCats try to win three of four in the series. Gary's Mike Schaefer (0-1, 13.50) will oppose Edmonton's Ira Brown (0-1, 5.40).

Notes: Kerber and Lopez have combined to pitch 10 innings this season, allowing just one hit and no runs. Kerber has thrown six hitless innings...Lee improved his batting average to .444...Anthony Iapoce went 2 for 4 and snapped an 0 for 13 slump...Alex Taylor started the game in right field and finished as the catcher. He has also played second base in an unusual show of versatility. Taylor went 2 for 3 to improve his average to .417...The RailCats have allowed three runs or less in five of their six games.
