Joliet JackHammers News Release
Joliet, ILâ With opening day starter Jason Shelley back on the hill, the Joliet JackHammers were confident that if they got him some run support, they would have a great chance of making it two wins in a row over the Kansas City T-Bones. Turns out they were right as Shelley was simply spectacular striking out a league best 11 T-Bone hitters. As for the bats, they were out in full force as the team wrapped out a team high 13 hits en route to a 6-1 victory that ensures at least a split with the T-Bones.
Shelley pitched a strong season opener just five days ago, but did not get a decision as he would allow just one earned run and strike out four. On Wednesday, he also gave up one earned run but admittedly had to "step it up" after his teammates on the mound had set the precedent for strikeouts (Villarreal had 9 just two nights ago). Jason's breaking ball was something to behold in the third game of the series as he left many batters walking away just shaking their heads. Shelley (1-0) would finish with four hits allowed, one walk and register his first win of the season.
Leading the way offensively Wednesday night was two members of last year's ball club, John Lackaff and Josh Loggins. Loggins was 3-4 with three runs scored and two RBI thanks to his 1st home run of the season. Lackaff meanwhile had three singles in his first three at bats and finished 3-4. Matt McCay also tallied his 3rd straight multi-hit game, finishing 2-4 with an RBI. Kyle Logan singled in the 3rd inning, giving him a six game hitting streak.
For the T-Bones, their #1 starter Jonathan Krysa (0-2) would be saddled with the loss, his 2nd of the season. Krysa finished six innings, allowing ten hits and four runs, three earned. He would strike out three in the losing effort. The lone run of the night for the T-Bones came courtesy of lead-off man Rick Prieto's 1st home run of the season, a solo shot in the 7th inning. He would be the only T-Bone with a multi-hit night, going 2-4.
The JackHammer's offense was methodical in the third game of this series, picking up a single run in the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 6th innings before tacking on the final two runs of the night in the 7th inning capped by Jim Kavourias' RBI single.
Loose gravel: It was Women's Wednesday at the ballpark, and to mark the evening the Chicago Bandits, a professional women's fast pitch softball team was on hand to join in the festivities.
Tomorrow in the finale of the series it will be a pair of right-handers Mike Wodnicki for the âHammers and Greg Bicknell for the T-Bones. It will be the final game of a seven game homestand. Joliet will then make their lone trip of the season to Canada where they will face Calgary and Edmonton each three times.
