Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN - On a night of celebration the Gary South Shore RailCats rally fell just short in a 5-3 loss to the Wichita WIngnuts. It was not only opening night but the RailCats celebrated last year's American Association Championship with a pre-game ring ceremony before facing the team who they beat in the four game series. Both teams got solid starting pitching with neither club able to do much on offense in the first four innings.
Stephen Hiscock (0-1) who struck out nine in 5.1 surrendered a solo homerun in the top of the fifth off the bat of Mike Hernandez to make it 1-0 Wichita. The Wingnuts would chase Hiscock from the game in the top of the sixth with one out. Carlo Testa doubled and was followed by a Jake Kaehaulelio single to put runners at first and second. Brent Clevlen then drove in Testa to make it 2-0 Wingnuts with a single on the right side. JT Wise would then make it 3-0 with an RBI single off of Ethan Gibbons who came in for the RailCats in relief.
With Mike Hernandez at the plate a wild pitch by Gibbons moved Clevlen and Wise up a base but Clevlen came home to score when Ryan Babineau's throw to third trying to get Clevlen hit the back of the bag at third and went down the left field line to make it 4-0. The Wingnuts bought a huge insurance run in the eighth after Jake Kaehaulelio doubled JT Wise drove in his second of the game with one out off of reliever Mike Weatherly.
The RailCats would fight back to make it interesting in the bottom of the ninth. Justin Gominsky walked off of Wichita reliever Michael Zouzalik but the righty was able to strike out Jeremey Hamilton for a big out number one. Zac Mitchell then followed with a single and Danny Pulfer worked a walk. With the bases loaded Drew Martinez walked to drive in a run and it was 5-1. Justin Romanski would follow with a single to right that scored two more and the RailCats had runners at the corners and were down 5-3.
With the tying run now at first and the go ahead at the plate and the RailCats looking to have the Wingnuts on the ropes Wichita closer Matt Nevarez got back to back strike outs of Ryan Babineau swinging and Wally Backman Jr. looking to end the ball game. The win went to Brown (1-1) while Hiscock was charged with the loss (0-1) Nevarez notched the save for Wichita (5)
The two teams play game two of the four game series Friday night at 7:10 pm at US Steel Yard with RHP Stephen Bougher (1-0) (1.50) going for the RailCats and RHP Justin Kipp (1-0) (0.00) for the Wingnuts.
