Sioux City Explorers News Release
Sioux City, IA - The Explorers only scratched across one run against Amarillo pitching Friday night as they lost game two of the four-game set 5-1 at Lewis & Clark Park.
The Sox (3-5) started the night with a bang. Lead-off man Jason Martin drove a solo home run over the left field wall in the top of the first for a 1-0 score. Sioux City (3-6) answered to tie it in the bottom of the first. Michael Lang led off with a line-drive double to right-center field. Following a walk of Rene Tosoni, Andres Perez singled to left to bring in Lang.
Amarillo reclaimed the lead in the third. With two outs in the inning, Josh Miller blasted a base hit to left. The next batter, Cory Patton, placed a bloop single to right. Keith Brachold's ground ball to second was booted and gave the Sox a 2-1 lead. The Sox added three more runs in the fourth for some insurance.
On the mound, both teams used four pitchers one night after playing a 14-inning game. Amarillo starter Michael Nannini posted the win. Nannini (1-1) worked five innings and gave up one earned run on seven hits with two walks and one strikeout. Sioux City starter Wade Morrison suffered the loss. Morrison (0-1) went three-and-two-thirds and yielded five runs (one earned) on six hits with eight strikeouts and three walks. The eight strikeouts set a new season-high for an Explorers pitcher. In his professional debut in the United States, Japanese pitcher Kohei Tsukada came on in relief to throw four-and-two-thirds. The Sioux City right-hander struck out two, walked three, and gave up two hits but no runs.
Jason Martin and Josh Miller each collected two hits at the top of the Amarillo lineup. Michael Lang, Rene Tosoni and Tom Mendonca all had three hits for Sioux City. The X's outhit the Sox 10-8 but made two errors on the night.
The Explorers' first extended home stand of the season continues at Lewis & Clark Park Saturday night with a 7:05 first pitch against the Amarillo Sox.
