Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, IN - The Gary South Shore RailCats outlasted the Wichita Wingnuts 6-5 in 14 innings Friday night and into the early minutes or Saturday morning at US Steel Yard. Rookie Adam Taylor had the game winning RBI single off of Wingnuts reliever Matt Robertson scoring RailCats pitcher Morgan Coombs who was inserted as a pinch runner in the walk off inning. The inning started with Jeremey Hamilton leading off with a double and Coombs running for the RailCats first baseman.

Some four hours and change earlier Witchita took the lead in the top of the third. Ryan Khoury hit a one out single to right then scored from first on an RBI double down the left field line by Jake Kahaulelio to make it 1-0. The RailCats came right back in the home half of the third. Zac Mitchell was hit by a pitch to start the inning. New RailCat Cody Bishop singled to put runners at first and second. Danny Pulfer hit a solid single to right to tie the game at one.

Both clubs got great starting pitching with Justin Klipp going 6.1 allowing four hits and three earned runs while Gary's Stephen Bougher went 6.1 allowing six hits and three earned runs. Neither starter was around when things got interesting.

The RailCats took the lead in the fifth when Drew Martinez ground ball to short scored Cody Bishop from third with one out to make it 2-1 RailCats. The game stayed that way until the top of the seventh when Wichita picked up a single from Mike Hernandez. The next batter Chris McMurray would triple to score Hernandez and it was even at two. With Dillon Hazlett batting RailCats reliever Kevin Brahney threw a wild pitch to score McMurray and it was 3-2 Wingnuts. Wichita added an insurance run in the eighth but it was not enough to stop the RailCats from tying the game.

The RailCats fought back in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. Facing closer Matt Naveraz Zac Mitchell reached on an error by first baseman JT Wise to lead off the inning. Cody Bishop would strike out and then Danny Pulfer worked a walk to put runners at first and second. Drew Martinez followed with a single to right to score Mitchell and then Josh Romanski hit a deep fly to center to score Pulfer who was at third to even it up at five.

The clubs went to extra innings both going 1-2-3 in the 10th. But the RailCats had a great chance to win it in the 11th with two outs they managed to load the bases off of Wichita reliever Jason Van Skike who was able to strike out Wally Backman Jr on a full count to leave the bases loaded. The RailCats had another chance in the bottom of the 12th with a leadoff double by Craig Maddox but would leave a pair at second and third. The Cats would strand two more in the bottom of the 13th and it looked like it might go on awhile until the 14th when the RailCats finally got the winning run across in the ballgame.

It was the second extra inning game for the RailCats this season to even their record at 4-4 while the Wingnuts dropped to 6-3. The winning pitcher was Coleman Stephens (1-0) who joined the club earlier in the day and the losing pitcher was Matt Robertson (0-1). The two clubs will play game three of the four game series at 6:10pm at US Steel Yard with RHP Morgan Coombs (0-1) (6.75)going for the RailCats while the Wingnuts counter with LHP Alan Williams (1-0) (7.50).
