Wichita Wingnuts News Release
GARY, IN - The Wichita Wingnuts and Gary SouthShore RailCats played a close to the vest, low-scoring game for most of their match-up on Saturday night at U.S. Steelyard. However, the Railcats put crooked numbers on the board in both the sixth and seventh inning to pull away and win 7-1.
The Wingnuts (6-4) would strike first for the eighth time in 10 games when Mike Hernandez drove home his third run in four games on an RBI single to left in the second inning off of RailCats' starter Morgan Coombs. That would be the only run that Wichita would score against the right-hander, who lasted 6.2 innings and allowed just seven hits, while striking out five.
Gary (5-4) answered back immediately in the home half of the inning. Zac Mitchell singled home Derek Smith to tie the game at two.
That score held all the way until the sixth, when the RailCats loaded the bases against Wingnuts' starter Alan Williams. Cody Bishop, the nine-hitter, playing in his second game this season, ripped a line drive to the wall in the right-center gap to clear the bases and put Gary ahead 4-1. That ended the night for Williams, who allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits and walked six. Bishop would score on Matt Robertson's first pitch out of the bullpen on a sacrifice fly by Danny Pulfer.
Already leading 5-1, the RailCats tacked on a couple more unearned runs in the seventh against Robertson. Mitchell struck again with a two-out, two-RBI single through the right side and in the blink of an eye it was 7-1.
The Wingnuts could not muster anything against Chuck Fontana who earned a three inning save as a result of the Gary win. Mitchell went 2-2 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI to lead the RailCats, while Carlo Testa was the lone Wichita hitter to record multiple hits.
The same two teams close out the series on Sunday afternoon at 2:10 p.m. RHP Jon Link will be handed the baseball for the Wingnuts and he will match up with RHP Dustin Crenshaw of the RailCats. .
