
RailCats Open Exhibition Season with Victory

GARY, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats opened a seven-game exhibition slate with a 5-4 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes in a scheduled 10-inning contest.
Winnipeg touched RailCat starter Scott Shaw with three hits in the top of the first inning, but managed just a run thanks to catcher Mike Valadez. Jonathan Wyatt opened the contest with a walk after working the count full. Amos Ramon followed with a single to push Wyatt to third. Valadez posted the first out by throwing out Ramon attempting to steal. Kody Kaiser opened the scoring with a bloop single to left, knocking home Wyatt with the game's first run. Kaiser was promptly picked off by Valadez.
The RailCats took the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first against Winnipeg hurler Dustin Glant. Adam Klein led off the game by reaching on an error and scored moments later when Kyle Haines drove a one-out double into the right-center gap. Another error enabled Cristian Guerrero to reach base and Louis Ott poked a single to left, scoring Haines and putting the RailCats on top. Alan Rick helped Winnipeg answer immediately to tie the game, opening the top of the second with a double and scoring on Luis Alen's one out sacrifice fly. Shaw tossed three innings in his spring debut, walking one and striking out three while scattering six hits and surrendering two runs.
Cody McMorris replaced Jeff Beachum at first base on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the second inning and promptly stole second before moving to third on a wild pitch. Klein induced a walk to place runners on the corners for Mike Rohde, who found a hole in the right side of the infield, singling home McMorris to put the RailCats back in front at 3-2.
The visitors took the lead for the first time since the first inning with a pair of runs against Chris Chavez in the top of the eighth inning. Price Kendall reached with one away after being hit by a pitch. Wyatt dropped a double just inside the left field foul line to place runners at second and third. Ramon evened the game with a sacrifice fly before Kaiser followed with a single up the middle to put Winnipeg ahead 4-3.
Speed helped the RailCats battle back in the bottom of the inning. McMorris worked a one-out walk from T.J. Macy, the game's sixth pitcher. The center fielder swiped second before Klein walked. A double steal advanced the runners and the throw to third sailed into the outfield, allowing McMorris to score. Defensive miscues helped the RailCats post the win in the 10th inning. McMorris reached with one away on a bunt single, moved to second on a throwing error, and stole third. McMorris scored the game winning run, his third of the day, on an error The Goldeyes committed five errors in the contest, and their pitching staff issued nine walks.
Mike Rohde and Louis Ott posted multi-hit performances for the RailCats with two apiece. McMorris netted four of eight steals in the game for the RailCats. Brian Kolb also posted a pair of stolen bags. Winnipeg will be at U.S. Steel Yard again tomorrow for another exhibition contest. First pitch is slated for 11:00 a.m.
The RailCats will trim their roster to 23 before opening the 2011 season against the Grand Prairie Air Hogs in Texas on Thursday, May 12. The 'Cats return to Northwest Indiana for Opening Night at U. RailCat Bits - Will Krout allowed just one hit in three innings of work out of the bullpen, one more than scheduled due to the pitch count of starter Scott Shaw. - Jeremy Hauer, who earned the win, recorded the lone 1-2-3 inning of the game for a RailCat pitcher, sitting Winnipeg down in order in the top of the 10th. - Brad Boyer was the only RailCat position player not to play in the contest.
