Wingnuts Offense Outlasts ESU in First Spring Win

EMPORIA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts won 10-8 over Emporia State University in an exhibition game at Glennen Field on Tuesday night.

Josh Horn and Jorge Delgado each collected three hits and combined for three RBI, while Josh Workman continued his hot start to the spring by going 2 for 2.

Already leading 1-0, the Wingnuts broke the game open with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.

Evan Button, Horn, and Ryan Patterson each drove in a run during the Wingnuts' fourth inning rally, while Delgado, Edwin Bellorin, and Jason Diaz knocked in runs in the fifth to open a 6-1 lead.

The Hornets plated four in the bottom of the seventh to make it 7-5, with Andy Cotton, Dill Hazlett, and Rudy Weiser each driving in runs.

Wichita re-extended its lead with a run in the eighth and two more in the ninth, before staving off another Emporia State Rally in the bottom of the final frame.

Thomas Fitzgerald singled home Diaz in the eighth to make it 8-5. Jeff Stevens and Horn chipped in one RBI each in the top of the ninth.

Hazlett hit an RBI single in the bottom half to trim the lead to 10-6. Karsten Strelliof hit a two-run double later in the inning to make it 10-8, but Wingnuts' reliever Reyes Dorado retired the next three hitters to preserve the win.

Dan Grybash earned the win in a designated split, tossing three scoreless innings in the start. Grybash struck out two and walked one.

Derek Brooks took the loss, also in a designated split, yielding one earned run in three innings.

Trent Lare allowed one unearned run in three relief innings, taking over for Grybash in the fourth. Eric Gilliland worked one scoreless relief inning for Wichita.

Delgado and Jorge Cortes each scored two runs. Horn stole two bases. Button and Diaz each had one stolen base. The Wingnuts are now 1-0-1 on the spring.

The Wingnuts spring training schedule continues on Thursday afternoon when they host the Kansas City T-Bones at 12:05 p.m. Tickets for the game are just $7.00 general admission and may be purchased at the gate the day of the game, or in advance at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

The Wingnuts open the 2011 season on May 12th at Amarillo. Wichita's 2011 home opener is Friday, May 20th versus the El Paso Diablos. Season tickets, mini packs, and group packages are on sale now.
