Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY â The Gary SouthShore RailCats have signed manager Garry Templeton to a 2004 contract, the team announced today.
"Garry's done a great job this year," said RailCats vice-president / general manger Roger Wexelberg. "He's learned a lot about the Northern League as the year has gone on. Garry has the respect of his players, it's been a pleasure to work with him, and we look forward to another good year next year.
"Garry has molded the roster to fit his baseball philosophy," Wexelberg said, "and the results of those efforts are evident in the improvement in our record in the second half."
With 13 games remaining in the second half, the RailCats are 15-17, matching their first-half win total. The RailCats have batted .324 as a team and averaged 6.3 runs per game in their last eight games, winning five of eight. RailCats pitchers have compiled a 2.56 ERA (25 ER in 88.2 IP) in the last ten games.
"I want to give the people of northwest Indiana a winner," Templeton said. "The way we've played over the last three weeks, in terms of being focused and having an idea of what's going on over the course of the game, is the way I want to play. I'm going to take my time and find the best possible players I can that fit that bill."
Templeton, a two-time All-Star shortstop with the St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Padres during a 16-year major league playing career, is 324-319 (.504 winning percentage) in five seasons as a minor-league manager. Sixteen members of the 2002 World Series Champion Anaheim Angels played for Templeton during his four seasons as a manager in the Angels' minor league system from 1998-2001.
