Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN - The Gary South Shore RailCats announced today they traded RHP Braulio Torres-Perez to the Florence Freedom of the Frontier League in exchange for a player to be named later. The RailCats activated RHP Richard Castillo from the Disabled List.
Torres-Perez pitched in two games for the RailCats and made his first professional start on July 31st. The 23 year-old was 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA in 2.2 innings. He retired the one batter he faced in his professional debut against the Kansas City T-Bones on July 25th. He struggled in his start against the Texas AirHogs but didn't get any help from his defense. The Washington native allowed five runs in 2.1 innings, but just two of the runs were earned. He surrendered five hits and struck out two batters without issuing a walk.
Torres-Perez came to the RailCats after a successful college career at Bellevue University in Nebraska. The Bruins made the NAIA College World Series and finished the season ranked third in the country. He joins a Florence team who is fighting to get out of last place in the Frontier League's West Division. The team in northern Kentucky is 29-39 on the year and is coached by former RailCats assistant Dennis Pelfrey.
Castillo comes back to the active roster one week after being placed on the DL. The right-hander has been a steady arm in the number two starter role throughout 2016. The Venezuelan is 4-3 with a 3.37 ERA in 15 starts. His 90.2 innings pitched is the 7th most of any pitcher in the American Association. Castillo is expected to start tonight against the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
2016 is the 15th season of RailCats Baseball in Northwest Indiana. For more information on Gary South Shore RailCats tickets and Group Outing information call 219-882-2255 or visit www.railcatsbaseball.com .
HEALTHY PUGH RETURNS TO RAILCATS
GARY, IN - The Gary South Shore RailCats announced today that outfielder Tillman Pugh is rejoining the RailCats after he was released on July 25th. The RailCats traded OF Adron Chambers to the Ottawa Champions of the Can-Am League for a player to be named later.
Pugh battled a lingering hip injury for a week before the RailCats released him 10 days ago. The American Association allows just one player to be on the Disabled List at a time and Brennan Metzger occupied that spot. Pugh was leading the team in home runs (8) and stolen bases (11) at the time of his release. His stolen base totals are still tops on the team and the home run numbers are tied for first with Frank Martinez. Pugh's batting average is .237 and he has 29 RBIs on the year. The Californian has played in 50 games and has started in all three of the outfield spots.
Chambers, a former St. Louis Cardinal, played in two games with the RailCats. He helped power Gary SoutShore to two victories in their series in Texas. He went 5-10 with two doubles and two RBI in the two starts. The veteran joined the RailCats in Texas where poor field conditions required the games to be played at an alternate stadium on the campus of West Texas A&M. Chambers spent parts of three seasons with the Cardinals, including the 2011 postseason in which the team won the World Series. Ottawa is 36-33 on the season and sits in fourth place in the Can-Am league. The top four teams make the playoffs.
The RailCats resume their season tonight after taking a three-day break for the All-Star Game. Gary SouthShore is 37-32 and sits 2.5 games out of first place in the Central Division.
