SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The Schaumburg Flyers scored four fifth inning runs to turn around a 2-0 deficit, pulling away for a 7-2 win Tuesday night over the Gary SouthShore RailCats at chilly Alexian Field.
Schaumburg's Chris Gaskin drew a walk to start the decisive fifth, and Kurt Crowell and Rontrez Johnson followed with back-to-back triples, driving in Gaskin and Crowell, respectively. After Mark Haske brought Johnson home with a sacrifice fly, Bo Hart drove the first pitch he saw over the fence in left for a solo home run, his first of the year.
The RailCats got the game's first run in the third inning when Eric McNamee drove home Rob Marconi from third with a sacrifice fly. The visitors scored again in the fifth inning with three straight singles, pushing a run across when Marconi knocked Brett Wallace in from second base.
The Flyers tacked on insurance runs in the seventh and eighth inning against RailCats relievers Drew Dickinson and Brandon Higelin. Phillips (1-1) did not make it out of the fifth inning, allowing four earned runs and suffering his first loss of the season.
Dan Frega (2-1) got the win for the Flyers (8-10), dancing in and out of trouble all night. The right-hander allowed nine hits and issued a walk, but surrendered only one earned run and pitched into the seventh inning. Former RailCat David Byard pitched the final two innings to secure the win.
Wallace and Marconi each had two hits to pace a 10-hit attack for the RailCats, who had three runners thrown out on the basepaths and hit into a pair of double plays. Steve Haake went 0-for-4, failing to reach base for the first time in 18 games in 2008.
The RailCats (7-11) will send left-hander Kai Tuomi (0-1, 3.48 ERA) to the mound Wednesday against Schaumburg's Steve Shippey (1-2, 7.47) at 6:20 p.m. Live coverage of that game will be available on WEFM, 95.9 FM, and online at www.sportsjuice.com .
