Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats have claimed left-handed reliever Kevin Tomasiewicz (tom-uh-SHEH-vitz) off waivers from the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, the team announced today. To make room for Tomasiewicz on the roster, pitcher Joe Panozzo has been placed on the disabled list, retroactive to May 28.
Tomasiewicz appeared in seven games with the RedHawks this season, going 1-0 with a 3.52 ERA over 7.2 innings. Tomasiewicz gave up 11 hits and three earned runs in those 7.2 innings, walking four and striking out four. The Park Ridge, Ill. native faced the RailCats four times, allowing three earned runs in 5.1 innings. Tomasiewicz began the season in the single-A Florida State League, throwing 5.0 innings for Saint Lucie before being released.
Tomasiewicz began his professional career in the New York Mets' minor league system after being selected in the 26th round of the 2005 amateur draft, advancing as high as double-A Binghamton in 2007. The left-hander's best professional season came in 2006, when Tomasiewicz went 6-2 with a 2.60 ERA at Hagerstown (A - South Atlantic), striking out 51 and walking only 13 in 65.2 innings.
As a collegiate pitcher, Tomasiewicz led Wisconsin-Whitewater to the 2005 NCAA Division III National Championship, going the distance in the National Championship Game against Cortland, his 15th win of the 2005 season. Tomasiewicz is the Warhawks' all-time record holder for career wins (35) and ranks third in school history in ERA (3.09).
Panozzo was signed by the RailCats on May 27 and pitched that night in Kansas City, allowing two hits and no runs in his two innings of work. The right-hander, who had not pitched since a brief stint with the RailCats in 2007, has been placed on the disabled list while the RailCats work to build his arm strength.
Tomasiewicz and the RailCats (7-10) will be in Schaumburg, Ill. tonight to take on the Flyers (7-10) at 6:20 p.m. Live coverage of that game from Alexian Field can be heard on WEFM, 95.9 FM, and online at www.sportsjuice.com .
