Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Gary, Ind.-Kris Cox collected three hits and drove in four runs to lead the St. Paul Saints to an 8-4 victory over the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Tuesday night at U. S. Steel Yard. With the win, St. Paul moved into a tie with Lincoln for first place in the Northern League's Southern Division.

The RailCats are one game out of first with five games to play. Gary continues to lead the wildcard standings. They lead Winnipeg by three games pending Winnipeg' s late game at Calgary on Tuesday.

The RailCats took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Ben Risinger walked to start the inning and scored from first on a one-out double by Tanner Townsend. With two outs, Jay Pecci hit a ground ball that was fielded by first baseman Billy Munoz, but Munoz's flip to the bag at first was dropped by pitcher Luis Villarreal for an error as Townsend scored from second.

But St. Paul answered with a big inning against RailCats starting pitcher Jamie Bennett in the fourth as they scored five runs and saw seven straight men reach base safely. Billy Munoz, Jeremy Frost, and Tee Brown each singled to load the bases with one out, and Juan Camacho delivered a two-run single to left to tie the game. After Bennett walked Mike Forbes, Coby Smith singled to center to drive in two more runs and make it 4-2. Kris Cox added an RBI hit to left to drive in Forbes and give St. Paul a three run lead. St. Paul added two more runs in the sixth on a two-out, two-run single by Cox to make it 7-2.

Gary's Anthony Iapoce pulled the RailCats to within four in the seventh with a run-scoring single, but St. Paul answered with an RBI hit by Cox in the eighth to make it 8-3.

Townsend homered to left with the bases empty in the Gary eighth inning to close out the scoring. It was Townsend's 10th home run of the season. St. Paul finished with 15 hits. Tee Brown joined Cox with three hits and Jeremy Frost and Juan Camacho each added two hits.

Bennett (9-5) failed for the fourth straight time to establish a RailCats club record for wins. He allowed 10 hits and seven earned runs over five and one-third innings to take the loss.

The RailCats meet the Saints in the second game of the series Wednesday at 7:00 PM at U. S. Steel Yard. Cody Fisher (1-3, 2.45) will start for Gary against St. Paul's Darren Truty (6-5, 4.66).

Notes: Fehlandt Lentini went 1 for 5 to extend his hitting streak to 14 straight games, five short of the RailCats club record with five games to play... The RailCats were 21-1 at home when scoring at least four runs prior to Tuesday's loss, and they were 16-1 when scoring first at home.

Playoffs: The RailCats will qualify as one of four Northern League playoff teams by either winning the Southern Division Second Half title or as a wildcard entry by finishing with the best overall record among teams that do not win the second half in either division. Here are the standings with five games to play in the regular season.
