Joliet JackHammers News Release
Joliet, IL- For the first time since September 4, 2004, the Joliet JackHammers (13-30, 36-55) penciled in Rich Hyde's name as their starting pitcher. Hyde, who also serves as the team's pitching coach, has spent the majority of the 2005 season rehabbing and recovering from shoulder surgery performed in the off-season. Rich originally said three innings would be his limit, as it turned out he would go four. Hyde allowed two runs on six hits while striking out two in his four innings of work. He retired the last four batters he faced on Tuesday.
The JackHammers won the game with an un-earned run in the eighth inning to give them a 4-3 lead they would not relinquish. Matt Petrusek pitched a perfect ninth for his second save of the season. The win meanwhile was credited to starter/reliever Seth Hill (2-1) who stepped in with four innings of work, allowing just one run on five hits while fanning a pair.
The loss goes to Dan Jackson (2-1), the Schaumburg reliever who allowed the un-earned run on one hit in the bottom of the eighth.
The deciding run was scored in the eighth by Bryan Goelz who reached on a one out walk, took second base on an error charged to Schaumburg's Jarrod Patterson, and came into score the eventual game winning run on a single from Jose Amado, who had his first three RBI game of the season on Tuesday night.
The Flyers came out quickly in the first, scoring a run on the first of two RBI singles from clean up hitter Justin Hendrickson. Hendrickson's hit scored Jarrod Patterson, who doubled off Hyde with the bases empty and two out.
The JackHammers answered with a solid bottom of the first, picking up a pair of singles and a two run scoring double off the bat of Jose Amado.
The runs were charged to Flyers starter Rick DeHart, a left-hander who would not factor into the decision of the game, leaving after seven innings tied.
A one out RBI double from nine hole hitter Joe Neal upped the Joliet advantage to 3-1. The RBI for Neal was his fourth of the season and scored second baseman Eric Blakeley, who led off the inning with a resounding double off the base of the wall in left field.
Schaumburg would tie it up in the fifth inning off reliever Seth Hill, after Hendrickson would again connect with an RBI single, this time scoring Oscar Materano who had reached on a fielder's choice and had later stole second base.
Schaumburg's Josue Lopez led all batters with a 3-4 night, all singles. Joliet meanwhile was paced by Jose Amado's 2-3, three RBI evening.
Game two of the series will be on Wednesday as the JackHammers send right-hander Nathan Kent (3-9, 3.91) to the hill to oppose left-hander R.J. Swindle (5-4, 3.28). On June 12, Kent twirled a complete game shutout, limiting the Flyers to just three hits at Alexian Field. Swindle is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in seven innings of work this season against the âHammers.
