Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Fargo, N.D.:The seasons and the players may change, but the Gary SouthShore RailCats struggles in Fargo, North Dakota remain the same. The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks defeated the RailCats for the second straight night on Tuesday, winning 7-2 to run their all-time regular season record against the RailCats to 31-3. The win was the RedHawks ninth in the last 10 games against Northern League opponents this season and improved their record to 9-3. The RailCats dropped to 3-9 on the year with the loss.
Fargo-Moorhead roughed up RailCats starter Neal Frendling (0-1) early, collecting nine hits and five runs off Frendling in one and two-thirds innings of work to build a lead they would not surrender. Meanwhile the RailCats struggled to take advantage of their opportunities at the plate, going just 1 for 17 with men on base in the game and leaving 12 runners aboard.
The RedHawks got a pair of run-scoring, two-out singles in the first inning from Eric Kofler and Jesse Hoorelbeke to take a 2-0 lead.
The RailCats tied the game in the top of the second. Nathan Haynes had an infield single, Brad Vericker walked, and Andy Rohleder was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no one out. Steve Booth's long sacrifice fly to right brought in Haynes, and Vericker scored on Alex Taylor's ground out to second to tie the game. Jay Pecci followed with a single to left as Rohleder tried to score from second, but Brent Krause made a strong throw to the plate to get Rohleder and retire the side.
Fargo-Moorhead responded with a three-run bottom of the second. Frendling retired the first two hitters in the inning before allowing a home run to Joe Mathis to right field to make it 3-2. Krause singled off the glove of Frendling and Richard Austin singled to right before Ruben Salazar ripped a double to right-center to drive in two runs and make it 5-2.
RailCats relievers Jeff Mault and Ryan Miller pitched well over the middle innings, combining to go five and one-third, allowing just two men to reach base and one run on a solo homer by Austin off Mault to make it 6-2. The RedHawks closed out the scoring with a single run off Ryan Burnau in the eighth.
The RailCats collected just two hits after the fourth inning and did not score. Their best chance came in the fifth when Steve Haake and Jermaine Allensworth collected back-to-back walks to start the inning, but Tanner Townsend grounded into a double play and Nathan Haynes lined out to left to end the threat.
The two clubs meet again Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Willie Glen (2-1, 4.80) will start for the RailCats against Brandon Goltz (1-0, 6.00).
Notes: Mike Coles had a ninth inning pinch hit double to continue his hot hitting for the RailCats. Coles is 7 for 15 on the season, batting .467...Rohleder went 0 for 3 to snap his six game hitting streak...Miller has allowed just one run in nine innings out of the Gary bullpen this season.
