
Ninth inning heroics as Flyers take first two of three in Joliet

The JackHammers struck first in the bottom of the second inning when Jayson Drobiak got on base with a lead off walk issued by Ian Holman. Bubba Smith would follow with a single to center and Kyle Nichols then walked to load the bases with nobody out. JD Faust then grounded into a 6-3 double play as Drobiak came in to score the first run of the game. Smith would then follow, scoring on a wild pitch by Holman. This gave the JackHammers a 2-0 lead going into the top of the third.
Flyers however had an answer in the third inning. With one out, Nelson Gord and Geoff McCallum both reached base after getting hit by Todd Ozias. Jarrod Patterson then was able to pick up his sixth and seventh RBI's of the year on a two out single to center field. Eric Cole then came up and hit the first pitch of his at bat over the left field wall to give the Flyers a 4-2 lead.
The JackHammers were able to score one in the bottom of the fourth on a homerun by Kyle Nichols, his third of the year. The Flyers would counter with one run in the top of the fifth when Rob Watson doubled Geoff McCallum in from second base, taking a 5-3 lead. The JackHammers would then tie it up in the bottom half of the inning at five apiece, which is where it would stay until the top of the ninth.
Derell McCall (0-1) came in the game in the sixth inning and got the Flyers out one through nine the first time through the lineup. In McCallum's second meeting with McCall he would bloop a two out triple past the diving Kyle Nichols in left field. Watson then singled the 1-1 offereing from McCall into right field picking up his second RBI of the night and giving the Flyers the lead for good at 6-5.
Nate Cotton came on to save the game in the ninth inning. He was able to put the game away after giving up a leadoff single and walking the next batter. The game ended on John Lackaff flying out to Eric Cole in center field. Flyers bullpen continued it's dominance with four more innings of scoreless baseball, bringing the steak to 42.0 innings.
The Flyers and JackHammers will face off tomorrow afternoon at 11:05 a.m. to wrap up the three game series here in Joliet. Flyer return home on Friday, June 2, when they will begin a three game series with the Gary SouthShore RailCats.
