Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Fargo, N.D. - Eric McNamee's base hit to center field with one out in the 10th inning drove in Steve Haake from third to break a scoreless tie as the Gary SouthShore RailCats defeated the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks 1-0 on Tuesday. RailCats pitchers Jamie Bennett and Travis Kerber combined to throw 10 scoreless innings as the RailCats broke a four game losing streak and improved their record to 24-20 in the first half with four games to play.

The win broke a mind-boggling 23 game head-to head losing streak for the RailCats against Fargo-Moorhead. The last Gary win over the Redhawks had been June 6, 2002,

Bennett and Redhawks starting pitcher Joe Sergent battled pitch for pitch into the ninth inning. Bennett left after eight, scattering nine hits with two walks and five strikeouts and stranding nine base runners. Sergent went nine and allowed six hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

Haake drew a lead-off walk as a pinch hitter to start the 10th against reliever Mel Spivey (0-3). Jay Pecci sacrificed Haake to second, and Haake stole third without a throw. McNamee then lined a 1-2 pitch into center field for the game's first run.

In the bottom of the 10th, the Redhawks put runners at first and third against Kerber (3-0). But center fielder Anthony Iapoce, who had saved a run with a great catch in the eighth inning, sprinted to his right to grab a deep fly ball of the bat of Kelley Gulledge to end the game.

The RailCats close out the road trip on Wednesday at 7:05 PM. Quintin Oldenburg (7-2, 3.77) will pitch for Gary against Fargo-Moorhead's Todd George (0-4, 6.86). The RailCats need one more victory in their final four games to ensure a winning first half and could re-enter the first half race by winning their final four games.
