Northern League announces All-Star managers and coaching staffs
July 5, 2005 - Northern League (NL) News Release
The Northern League announced today the managers and coaching staffs for its 2005 All-Star Game, which will be played at U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Indiana on Tuesday, July 19.
Mike Busch, who has guided the expansion Calgary Vipers to their current second place standing, will be the manager of the North Division All-Stars. Busch, a former infielder with the Los Angeles Dodgers and hitting coach with the Lincoln Saltdogs, has guided the first year Vipers to a 23-18 record, putting the club just 2.5 games behind Fargo-Moorhead in the first half race. Calgary produced the best winning percentage in the Northern League for June at 16-9 (.640).
The South Division All-Stars will be co-managed by Andy McCauley of the Schaumburg Flyers and George Tsamis of the St. Paul Saints. The decision to have co-managers was made due to the fact both Schaumburg and St. Paul were in the championship series in 2004. Schaumburg was the South Division champion while St. Paul was the North Division and overall league champion, defeating the Flyers in an exciting five-game series.
With the Northern League expanding to Calgary and Edmonton in 2005, St. Paul moved from the North to the South Division. It will be the third Northern League All-Star managerial assignment for Tsamis as he guided the East Division All-Stars in the 2001 and 2002 Games, when the Northern League included what is now the Can-Am League. It is the first time that McCauley, the 2004 Northern League Manager of the Year, has been the league All-Star manager.
The North Division All-Star coaching staff will include coach Steve Maddock of the Calgary Vipers and coach Bucky Burgau of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.
Greg Tagert, manager of the host Gary SouthShore RailCats, Jackie Hernandez, coach of the St. Paul Saints, and Brett Gray, pitching coach of the Schaumburg Flyers, will comprise the coaching staff for the South Division All-Stars.
The starting lineups for the 2005 All-Star Game will be selected by Northern League managers, announcers, and media. The reserves and pitching staffs will be chosen by the All-Star managers. The starters will be announced on Monday, July 11 with reserves and pitchers being named on Tuesday, July 12.
The 2005 All-Star Game activities include a luncheon on Tuesday, July 19 at the Radisson Hotel in Merrillville, Indiana, beginning at 11:30 a,m. Special guests will include National Football League Hall of Fame player and coach Mike Ditka and former Negro Leagues great Buck O'Neil. The All-Star Game at U.S. Steel Yard that evening includes a pre-game home run derby and other special events. First pitch will be at 7:30 p.m. The All-Star Game is presented by U.S. Steel Gary Works.
