JOLIET, IL - The Northern League announced that IF Jayson Drobiak of the Joliet JackHammers won the player of the month award for June, 2005.
Drobiak batted .355 with a league best nine home runs and thirty-four RBI. Jayson had two multi-home run games in the month of June. The first was at Silver Cross Field against the St. Paul Saints on June 5, going 3-5 with two home runs and five RBI. The second was at Kansas City on June 14, going 3-4 with two home runs and four RBI. In the twenty-seven games the âHammers played in June, Jayson had a multi-hit game in thirteen.
Jayson was a 1999 draft pick of the Detroit Tigers, selected in the 44th round. When asked about Drobiak before the season started, Isom responded, "We're looking for him to hit right in the middle of our lineup between Loggins and Kavourias". Needless to say, Jayson has lived up to his billing as a premier power hitter in the Northern League.
Last season in the Florida State League (A), Jayson hit .229 in 81 games with 11 home runs and 43 RBI while playing for Tampa. His most prolific season came in 2003 while playing for Battle Creek of the Midwest League (A). In that season he batted a solid .293, clubbed 30 home runs and added 86 RBI. This will be Jayson's third stint in the Independent leagues, as he spent 2001 with Springfield and 2002 with Rockford, both of the Frontier League.
Four Joliet JackHammers have had the honor of being voted player month. Three JackHammers have earned the praise, the most recent being Jayson Drobiak, June 2005; catcher Ryan Sienko in June of 2002; and pitcher Brian Mazone in August 2003 and July of 2004.
Loose Gravel: On Thursday, July 7 at Silver Cross Field, some of the biggest names in racing will collide with stars of the diamond Ryne Sandberg and Jennie Finch as Racin' the Bases comes to Joliet.
The JackHammers return home on July 8 to finish up the first half with a three game series with the Schaumburg Flyers.
