Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. - It was a classic pitcher's duel between Fargo-Moorhead's Joe Sergent and Gary's Jamie Bennett, but it took extra innings to decide Tueday night's game at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo.
Eric McNamee's RBI single in the top of the tenth inning scored Steve Haake from third base for a 1-0 RailCats victory over the RedHawks. McNamee's hit came off RedHawks reliever Mel Spivey (0-3), who entered the game to start the inning. He walked Haake, who advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Jay Pecci and then stole third base. The victory was just the second against Fargo-Moorhead in franchise history for Gary, who are now 2-25 all-time against the RedHawks, dating back to the 2002 season.
Neither starting pitcher figured in the decision despite their brilliant performances. Sergent pitched 9.0 shutout innings, allowing just six hits. He struck out five batters and walked one. Bennett pitched 8.0 shutout innings and scattered nine hits but did not figure in the decision. He struck out five batters and walked two. Travis Kerber (3-0) picked up the victory with two innings of shutout relief. He allowed two hits and struck out three batters. Spivey took the loss for Fargo-Moorhead.
The RedHawks and RailCats will conclude their three-game series on Wednesday night at Newman Outdoor Field. Game time is 7:05 p.m., with Todd George (0-4) getting the start for the RedHawks. Gary will counter with Quintin Oldenburg (7-2).
