Schaumburg Flyers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL - Four unearned runs on the Fourth of July ended the Schaumburg Flyers' hopes for celebrating a victory on Monday, July 4, losing to the Kansas City T-Bones by a final of 5-3. Monday's game was also delayed by an hour and a half due to some uncooperative weather conditions. The Independence Day game at Alexian drew a crowd of 7,095, the largest fan showing of the season since playing Joliet on June 11. The loss dropped Schaumburg to 14-29 and extended their current losing streak to four games. The win helped Kansas City to a half game lead over St. Paul, who lost to Joliet the same night, in the Northern League's South Division standings.
For the fourth time in as many games, Schaumburg opponents were first on the scoreboard. Eric Vega drew a walk from Flyers starter Anthony Boughner (3-5) to open the game and advanced to second on a passed ball. Greg Jacobs singled to right field to bring in an unearned run. Two batters later and one out, ex-major leaguer David Segui reached first on a throwing error by Nelson Gord. Jacobs came home on the gaffe, giving his team an early 2-0 advantage.
Marcus Nettles, who singled with one out, broke for second with Eric Cole at bat. The ensuing throw from T-Bone C Matt Ceriani flew into center field, allowing Nettles to try for third. Jacobs committed the second throwing error on the play trying to gun Nettles from center, and the speedy Flyer outfielder came home to take the score to 2-1.
Justin Hendrickson (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 R) moved closer to a Flyer milestone, connecting on two solo homers in the second and fifth innings off KC's David Viane (4-2). The two blasts give Hendrickson 30 in his career with the Flyers, two shy of Mario Delgado's record of 32. Hendrickson's second homer gave the Flyers the lead by a slight margin of 3-2.
But another pair of unearned runs in the top of the sixth erased the Schaumburg lead for good. A single by Brandon Jones and a throwing error by Josue Lopez set up two runners in scoring position. With one out, Chad Sosebee tipped an offering from Boughner in front of the mound. Boughner misplayed the ensuing throw to first and two more unearned runs. KC was able to tack on an insurance run off reliever Sam Jansen to bring the score to 5-3.
The Flyers had their share of late-game chances to get back in the game. In the eighth, Hendrickson had a chance to be a hero but struck out to KC reliever Nate Ruhl with the bases loaded. In the ninth, the Flyers put runners on the corners with one out. But Nettles was caught trying to steal second, an out that seemed to the wind out of the Flyers' sails. Jonathan Krysa (1 SV) got Eric Cole to fly out to center to end the ballgame.
On Tuesday night, the Flyers will send Matt Bailie (5-0, 1.25) to the mound against Greg Bicknell (8-0, 2.31) to try and put a stop to the Flyers' four-game skid. Tickets for the 7:05 game are available at flyersbaseball.com or (847) 891-2255.
Notes: Earlier on Monday, Flyers RHP Matt Bailie was named Northern League Pitcher of the Week for June 27-July 3. Bailie pitched a seven-inning complete game shutout at Calgary in his only appearance last week. The staff ace returns to the mound with a 5-0 record on Tuesday to oppose Kansas City RHP Greg Bicknell (8-0). It will be a battle of who many believe are the top two pitchers in the league. Tickets are available for the 7:05 PM game at Alexian Field. The game will be webcast if you can't be at the park.
