Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

WICHITA, KS - The Gary South Shore RailCats road trip was looking like it was off to a great start until the Wichita Wingnuts came from behind to beat the Cats 4-2 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium Friday night. In a game complete with a 35 minute delay for fireworks in downtown Wichita the RailCats got another outstanding start this time from Dustin Crenshaw (ND) who held the Wingnuts scoreless through six.

Behind Crenshaw who was clearly on Friday night the RailCats took the lead in the third inning after Danny Pulfer and Drew Martinez singled with one out off of Wingnuts starter Jon Link (ND). Craig Maddox would deliver an RBI single scoring both runners to make it 2-0 RailCats. It looked like that might be all the RailCats would need until the eighth.

The Wingnuts were able to mount the comeback chasing Crenshaw from the ball game in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff single for Chris McMurray. Coleman Stephens would then enter the game and walk the first batter he faced in Colt Loehrs. David Amberson then laid down a sacrifice bunt but Stepehens and RailCats third baseman Wally Backman Jr. let the ball roll between them and allow Amberson to reach and load the bases. RailCats skipper Greg Tagert brought lefty Joe Testa into the game to face left handed batter Carlo Testa. The Wichita Testa turned on fast ball to center over the head of RailCats center fielder Cody Bishop to clear the bases with a double to make it 3-2 Wichita. Then at 9:45pm there was a 35 minute delay for fireworks and the game resumed in the eighth after the show was over.

Wichita got one more run on a Jake Kahaulelio triple to make it 4-2. Wingnuts closer Matt Nevarez came in to close out the game and allowed a two out single to Drew Martinez but got Josh Romanski on a deep fly to the warning track in left to earn the save. The two teams will play game two of the three game series Saturday night with RHP Stephen Hiscock going for the RailCats against Wingnuts LHP Andy Capra. The game can be heard n WEFM 95.9 in NWI and online at RailCatsbaseball.com.
