Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS (May 29, 2014) - The Wichita Wingnuts have hit a rhythm both at the plate and on the mound since returning home four days ago from a trip to Gary SouthShore. Everything was on display on Thursday night, when the Wingnuts dismantled the Laredo Lemurs 11-2 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Starting pitcher Alan Williams allowed a run in the first inning to the Lemurs (6-8), but his teammates picked him up and then some in the bottom of the inning. With one out Carlo Testa doubled to left field and Jake Kahaulelio was hit by a pitch from Laredo starter Sean Tracey to put two on with one out. After Brent Clevlen grounded into a fielder's choice for the second out, six straight Wingnuts reached base safely and the team had snatched away a 6-1 lead. J.T. Wise (2), Mike Hernandez, Taylor Oldham, and Ryan Khoury (2) all drove in runs in the inning.
Williams would allow one more run in the outing and that came in the Lemurs' half of inning number four. Josh Scheffert drove in Gerardo Avila, who had previously singled, to trim the lead to 6-2. Williams would go on to work 6.0 innings, allowing the two runs on four hits, while walking three. His quality start was the 11th in the first 15 games for the Wingnuts' starting rotation.
The Wingnuts (11-4) added two more runs against Tracey in the third inning, eventually chasing him from the game. The right-hander threw two wild pitches that allowed Ryan Khoury and Testa to score and make it 8-1. Tracey departed after working 2.2 innings and allowing eight runs on six hits and five walks.
Mike Hernandez drove in his second run of the game in the fifth inning when his single up the middle scored Clevlen, who had reached earlier on an infield single. Wichita also added lone runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to continue extending the lead to the eventual final mark of 11-2.
The bullpen was stellar once again, as Matt Robertson, Jason Van Skike, and Daniel Bennett each worked scoreless innings to salt away the game. Bennett finished things with a flurry by striking out the side in the ninth. The Wingnuts completed their first sweep of the season and have now won a season-best five straight games.
On Friday night the Wingnuts begin a three-game series with the Gary SouthShore RailCats at home. RHP Jon Link will make the start for Wichita against RHP Dustin Crenshaw of Gary. The game will begin at 7:05 p.m. and there will be a fireworks show following the game.
