Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Sioux Falls, SD August 16, 2015 -Not even the rain could stop the Gary South Shore RailCats from getting out the brooms this weekend in Sioux Falls. A game that was scheduled to begin at 2:05pm was delayed until 5:30pm and the RailCats came shining through with a 7-2 win in six innings over the Canaries despite off and on rain the rest of the way.
Just about 10 minutes before first pitch the skies opened up and the rain came down. The field was covered but the rain continued. The crowd at Sioux Falls stadium was told that the game was to be cancelled. After a nearly two hour delay the umpires asked the front office staff to uncover the field as the rain stopped. The game then was back on but would start with a near empty ballpark and without most of the game day staff.
The RailCats wasted no time getting the early lead once the first pitch finally was thrown. In the top of the first the RailCats got a pair of RBI hits from Adam Taylor and Jose Sermo off of Sioux Falls starter Shawn Blackwell to take a 2-0 lead. Sioux Falls went 1-2-3 as Gary starter Chuck Fontana worked a clean bottom of the first.
The Canaries then tied the game in the bottom of the second off of Fontana when Angel Chavez RBI single to left scored two and the game was tied at two. The rain continued as the grounds crew would come out after every half inning and work to dry to mound and plate area.
The game stayed tied at two until the top of the fourth. With one out the RailCats Brennan Metzger walked and Alex Hernandez singled. Elbert Devarie then moved the runners to second and third. The RailCats then score a run on a passed ball by Sioux Falls catcher Tyler Shover to take a 3-2 lead and added another run on a wild pitch by Blackwell and it was 4-2.
Fontana then executed another shut down inning and the RailCats added two more on a two run line shot home run by Adam Taylor to make it 6-2 South Shore. The game became official after Fontana worked a scoreless bottom of the fifth. The RailCats got an RBI double from JD Pulfer to make it 7-2 in the top of the sixth but rain and lighting finally won out and the game was called then.
Fontana (4-4) picked up the win while Blackwell (2-9) was charged with the loss. The RailCats swept the series and won for the fourth time in a row and completed a 4-2 road trip.
The South Shore will head home to face the Joplin Blasters in the visitors first ever trip to US Steel Yard for a three game set. It is also a key series in the American Association Wild Card standings. The RailCats began play Sunday 6.5 games behind Joplin with four games on the horizon against the Blasters. The upcoming series with Joplin will also include the completion of a suspended game from August 5th with the RailCats leading 2-0. That game began in Joplin and will be completed August 18th at 5:00pm prior to the regular series opener at 7:10pm.
