Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
A solid start by Kyle Anderson and a two-run homer by Casey Haerther was a pretty good combination for the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
Sunday afternoon in front of 6,878 at Shaw Park, the Goldeyes got eight solid innings from Anderson, Haerther's eighth homer of the year and a big two-run double from Ryan Babineau, as the Goldeyes beat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 8-1 to salvage the final game of a three-game weekend series.
With the win, the Goldeyes improved to 36-43 and stayed in the American Association wild card hunt. The Goldeyes went 3-3 on their six-game homestand and improved to 17-22 at home this season (2-8 in day games at home).
"Kyle gave us two great starts here at home this week," said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. "He's started to really spin his curveball and because of that, he's been a lot more effective. He's been beating up the strike zone and keeping the ball down. All of that helps to keep his pitch count down - although we did stretch him out to 110 pitches today and that's the first time we've done that - and he's gaining a lot of confidence. He was very good today."
The Goldeyes opened the scoring with two out in the bottom of the second. Luis Alen singled, Tillman Pugh drew a walk and the Babineau banged a two-run double to put the Goldeyes ahead to stay.
In the third, Adam Heisler beat out an infield single and then, with two out, Haerther hit a line shot that just cleared the left field fence to give the Fish a 4-0 lead.
After Fargo picked up a run in the fourth on a solo homer by Chad Mozingo, the Goldeyes blew it open in the sixth. With one out, Pugh singled and Babineau singled, sending the speedy Pugh to third. That's when James Boddicker pulled off the safety squeeze to perfection. Not only did Boddicker bunt Pugh home, the bunt bounced over the head of Fargo pitcher Taylor Stanton and resulted in an infield bunt single and an RBI. Two batters later, with runners on second and third, Casio Grider singled to centre to score both Babineau and Boddicker and suddenly it was 7-1.
The Goldeyes added a run in the seventh when Josh Mazzola walked, went to second after Luis Alen was hit by a pitch and came home on a single by Pugh.
The Goldeyes finished with eight runs on 11 hits, while Fargo had one run on six scattered hits. Babineau led the Fish with three hits, including a double, two RBI and a run scored. Pugh had two hits and a walk, scored two runs and drove in one. Grider had two singles, a sacrifice bunt and two RBI. Boddicker had two hits, a run scored and an RBI.
Anderson (4-5, 4.38 ERA) allowed only one run and had six strikeouts over eight innings and earned the victory while Stanton (3-4, 4.22) suffered the loss. Brad Mincey (4.63 ERA) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.
Anderson has now had five straight strong starts, three of those starts have officially been quality starts and he's allowed two or fewer runs in his last five starts.
The Goldeyes will head to the airport early Monday morning and catch a flight to Montreal. The Goldeyes will open a 10-game road trip on Monday in Trois-Rivieres. Right-hander Edwin Carl (2-0, 2.49 ERA), who has had two outstanding starts, will take to the bump for Winnipeg on Monday night. The game can be heard live on The Jewel 100.5 with Steve Schuster at the microphone.
