Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - The RailCats added free agent first baseman Steven Liddle to the roster and sent right-handed pitcher Aaron Wilkerson to the Fort Worth Cats (United League) for future considerations on Monday.
Liddle, a former Minnesota Twins farm hand, will make his first foray into independent ball after a four-year run in affiliated baseball. After a successful career at Vanderbilt University, where in his senior season he led the Commodores in doubles (22), on-base percentage (.443) and slugging percentage (.572), Liddle was drafted in the 15th round of the 2009 amateur draft by the Minnesota Twins.
Steve's best season as a professional came in 2010 as a member of the Beloit Snappers (single-A) where he hit 15 home runs and drove in 70 runs while batting .253 in 116 games. He split the 2012 season between Beloit and high-A Fort Myers playing in 66 games and blasting 8 home runs.
Aaron Wilkerson signed with the RailCats on November 20, 2012 as a rookie out of Cumberland University (Tenn.). A first team all NAIA selection in his senior season (2011), Wilkerson wrote his name all over the NAIA record books by recording 54 consecutive scoreless innings in 2011 and set the mark for consecutive victories in a career with 26. He went a perfect 12-0 with a staggering 1.49 ERA in 14 games, 13 starts, during his senior season, striking out 90 batters in 90 1/3 innings and walking just 22.
The RailCats will open the exhibition season on Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. against the Schaumburg Boomers in Schaumburg, Ill. Please not the change from the originally scheduled afternoon time.
