LAST TIME OUT: Michael Turner scored his third goal of the season but the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs were defeated by the Fayetteville FireAntz, 4-1, Saturday night at the Crown Coliseum. Ryan de Melo made 33 saves on 37 shots in the losing effort.
BETWEEN THE PIPES: Brandon Anderson returns from injured reserve to make the start for the Rail Yard Dawgs. Anderson last appeared November 11 against Evansville, leaving with an injury late in the first period. He has gone 2-2-0 with a 3.01 GAA and a .903 SV% over five starts this season.
GOING THE WRONG WAY: Saturday's loss was Roanoke's fourth straight, closing out the November slate of games with an 0-3-1 stretch. The Dawgs have been outscored 13-6 over the four-game losing streak, which represents their longest skid of the young season.
POWER OUTAGE: The Rail Yard Dawgs went a combined 0-for-6 on the power play over the weekend road trip, including an 0-for-5 showing in Friday's 2-1 loss against Knoxville. Roanoke is now 1-for-22 with a man advantage over its last seven games after beginning the season 6-for-26 over its first five. The Dawgs are 1-for-12 on the power play during their current four-game losing streak.
ABOUT HUNTSVILLE: The Havoc play the second of a three-games-in-three-nights stretch on Friday. After taking out Peoria, 3-2, in overtime on Thursday night, Huntsville sits alone in second place with 20 points. The Dawgs have played one game against the Havoc this season and fell in overtime, 3-2, on 11/5 in Roanoke. Tyler Gjurich scored twice, Steve Mele and Jackson Brewer notched two assists and Ryan de Melo made 45 saves on 48 shots in the loss. Those 48 shots are the most that Roanoke has allowed in a game this season.
ROSTER SHUFFLE: Over the last week, D Bryan Dallaire, F Craig Skudalski and G Matt Kaludis were waived, G Brandon Anderson and F Mike Driscoll were activated from injured reserve, F Steve Mele was placed on injured reserve and D Matt Chiarantano and F Mark Meads were signed to contracts.
FAMILY NEWS: Robbie Ftorek, father of Rail Yard Dawgs coach Sam Ftorek, was named head coach of the Norfolk Admirals (EDM: ECHL) on Tuesday, replacing the fired Ron Aldoff. A member of the US Hockey Hall of Fame, Robbie Ftorek played nine seasons in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings, NY Rangers and Quebec Nordiques before turning to coaching. The 64-year-old was most recently an assistant for Abbotsford (CGY: AHL) in 2013-14.
THE NEW GUYS: Matt Chiarantano has played four career ECHL games since finishing his collegiate career at Niagara University last spring, three in the 2015-16 season and one in 2016-17. Mark Meads played in one ECHL game with Manchester (LAK: ECHL) in 2015-16 after completing his NCAA career at Saint Anselm. Both men will make their SPHL debuts
