Rage Falls Short Against Defending Champs

Broomfield, Colo. - In the only meeting between the two teams this season, the defending CHL champion Laredo Bucks proved their title by defeating the Rocky Mountain Rage hockey team 5-1 tonight at the Broomfield Event Center. The Rage falls to 8-23-4 (20 points) for fourth place in the northwest division, while the Bucks improve to 26-9-3 (53 points) for first place in the southeast division.

Laredo's second most prolific goal scorer, Chris Korchinski opened scoring at 2:09 of the first period giving the Bucks the early lead on the power-play from Igor Agarunov and Paul Elliott. Forward Bobby Chaumont added his 19th goal of the season and team-leading 39th point at 13:44 on a breakaway chance, giving the Bucks a two-goal lead going into the second period. The Rage outshot the Bucks 13-10.

Laredo dominated play in the second period outshooting the Rage 23-5. Defenseman Kris Mallette continued Laredo's scoring streak at 7:51 putting the puck in net right off the faceoff won by Leo Thomas. Laredo's Clark and Chaumont added goals at 8:36 and 10:38 giving the Bucks a commanding lead.

After their fifth unanswered goal, Rage goaltender Trevor Cunning stepped in for David Guerrera at 10:38 of the second period. Guerrera made 20 saves in the effort against his former team.

The Rage earned a three on one opportunity from center ice at 11:39 for Rocky Mountain's best scoring chance of the night and a momentum boost for the team. Preston Briggs passed the puck to Clay Plume who sent it across ice for Nathan Rosychuk to slide the puck in net past the left skate of Laredo goaltender Kevin Reiter.

Scoring chances picked up for the Rage including an opportunity by Chip Dunleavy with just over three minutes remaining in the period. With under a minute remaining in the period, Laredo picked up speed and peppered Cunning, who stopped four consecutive scoring chances. Rocky Mountain took control of the puck in the final seconds of the second period. Rage left winger Trevor Weisgerber picked up a rebound at the other end just seconds later and fired it on net, but could not beat Laredo goalie Reiter.

Laredo maintained momentum in the third period. Rocky Mountain's Trevor Cunning stopped all 15 Laredo shots. Both teams were scoreless in the final period.

The Rage returns to action on Friday (Jan. 26) when they travel to play the New Mexico Scorpions.
