BROOMFIELD, Colorado - The defending CHL President's Cup Champion Laredo Bucks beat the Rocky Mountain Rage 5-1 at the Broomfield Events Center in front 3,415 fans. Forward Bobby Chaumont scored a pair of goals as Laredo led from start to finish. The Bucks have recorded a standings point in four straight games and 12 of their last 13. Laredo is a Southern Conference best 25-9-3 with 53 points and they lead the Southeast Division by eight points. The Bucks and the Colorado Eagles match up in a huge CHL game on Wednesday night as the leaders in the Northern and Southern Conference collide. Laredo returns home on Friday, February 9th, against the Arizona Sundogs. The Bucks are offering season tickets starting at $125 dollars. For more info call (956)-718-BUCK (2825).
The Bucks jumped out to an early lead on a power play chance. Rookie forward Chris Korchinski scored on a wrist shot from the right circle high glove side at 2:09. It was his third straight game with a goal and his 17th of the season. Later in the period Chaumont got loose on a breakaway and scored his CHL rookie leading 19th of the year at 13:44 to make it 2-0 Laredo.
In the second period the Bucks opened it up. Defenseman Kris Mallette waited for a screen to develop in front then snapped home his first goal of the season on a wrist shot at 7:51. Just 45 seconds later forward Neil Clark banged home a rebound to make it 4-0. It was the second of the season for Clark. Later in the period Chaumont potted his second of the night on a one-timer from the slot on a feed from forward Igor Agarunov to make it 5-0 at 10:38. The Rage finally got on the scoreboard at 11:39 as defenseman Clay Plume found cutting forward Nathan Rosychuk backdoor for a tip in goal. Laredo out shot the Rage 23-5 in the frame.
The Bucks closed out the third period with solid defense to complete the victory. FINAL SCORE Laredo 5, Rocky Mountain 1.
Kevin Reiter was solid in net stopping 25 of 26 shots and improving to 7-2-0. David Guerrera, the former Buck, allowed five goals on 23 shots in 30:38 and took the loss to fall to 8-15-3. Trevor Cunning stopped all 25 shots in 29:22 of work, but did not factor in the decision.
The Bucks were 1-6 on the power play while Rocky Mountain went 0-5. Laredo out shot the Rage 48-25.
