Rafter Rally Comes up Short against Kingfish

Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. - The Rafters gave the Kingfish a scare, nearly overcoming an 11-run deficit, but Wisconsin Rapids fell to Kenosha 13-10. The Kingfish scored 11 runs in the first two innings, taking an early 11-0 lead. The Rafters scored five unanswered in the second and third to work their way back in the game, then had a five-run seventh inning to pull within striking distance. But Kenosha reliever Callahan Brown shut the door on Wisconsin Rapids in the final two innings to secure the win for the Kingfish. The loss drops the Rafters back to .500 at 11-11, while the win is the sixth-in-a-row for Kenosha, who is now a Northwoods League best 19-5.

Trevor Haas picked up the win for Kenosha in relief of starter P.J. Schuster, his first win of the summer. John Malmin (Texas) took the loss for the Rafters, giving up five runs in his one inning of work. Brown got the save, throwing the final three innings for Kenosha. Dmitry Shtykher (Russia) and Nick Nelsen (Iowa Western CC) pitched well out of the bullpen for Wisconsin Rapids, combining for seven innings of work, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six and walking a pair.

The Kingfish come out swinging hot bats, bringing nine batters to the plate in the first and 11 in the second. Kenosha brought home five runs in the first, then followed it with six in the second. The Kingfish didn't hit any balls particularly hard, reaching on eight singles, five walks and just one double, but found holes in the Rafters' defense.

The Rafters scored five unanswered with two in the second and three in the third to work their way back into the game, 11-5. Kenosha responded with a run in the fifth and sixth to begin to pull away, but Wisconsin Rapids wasn't quite done. The Rafters put up a five-spot in the bottom of the seventh as Sam Tolleson (Central Florida) hit a two-RBI double and Brock Carpenter (Seattle) hit a three-run bomb to right center for his first home run of the summer.

Unfortunately, that would be as close as Wisconsin Rapids would get as Brown sent the Rafters down in order in the eighth and ninth to end the game.

Wisconsin Rapids is back in action on Friday to start a new two-game series with the Battle Creek Bombers. The Rafters swept the Bombers in Wisconsin Rapids in an evening doubleheader on June 12. It's Jockey Being Family Superhero Night at Witter Field and all kids in their superhero costume will get in for free. There will also be a contest to determine the best superhero attire.
