Kingfish Quell Late Rafter Rally
June 19, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Kenosha Kingfish News Release
Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. - The Kingfish learned a very valuable lesson about momentum: "It can change in a hurry," said Manager Duffy Dyer. Momentum went through a couple of shifts Thursday night and, because of that, almost cost the Kingfish their winning streak. The Kingfish were able to hold on, however, and win 13-10 over the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters.
The Kingfish got the scoring started by bouncing 2014 Northwoods League All Star pitcher Jon Malmin after one inning of action. The Kingfish sent 9 batters to plate in the first inning, striking for five runs off of five hits. Joey Graziano relieved him in the second and the Kingfish found even more success, plating 6 runs after sending 11 hitters to the plate, giving the Kingfish an 11-0 lead going into the bottom of the second frame.
Then the momentum started to shift.
Wisconsin Rapids put a three spot up on the board thanks in part to a couple of wild pitches by PJ Schuster, and struck for two more in the third. The Kingfish retaliated with an Eric Filia RBI double in the fifth, which was replicated an inning later by Brody Westmoreland, making the Kingfish the leaders 13-5. The Rafters pushed two more across in the bottom of the seventh before Brock Carpenter blasted a three run homerun to center field to make the score 13-10. Callahan Brown surrendered the homerun upon inheriting runners at second and third, but then proceeded to retire eight straight to notch the save, giving the Kingfish their fourteenth win in fifteen games.
PJ Schuster started on the mound for the Kingfish, allowing five runs in four innings of work. Trevor Haas relieved him, allowing four runs in 2.1 IP, earning the win along the way. Callahan Brown took the save after 2.2 IP and allowing just one earned run.
Nick Sergakis went 4-5 with 3 R, as Eric Filia added three hits of his own. Hunter Alexander, Zach Ratcliff, and Brody Westmoreland each had two-hit evenings to help power a Kingfish offense that tallied fourteen hits.
The Kingfish's latest success has pushed their lead in the Northwoods League South Division Standings to six games. The Kingfish will look to continue their success as they take on the Madison Mallards in Madison tomorrow night at 7 CDT.
