Bullfrogs Start Key Divisional Series with Chinooks
June 19, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wis.- Everyone was shivering. Players took batting practice in hooded sweatshirts. It was a cold weekend on May 30-31, the first road series for the Bullfrogs who split two with the Lakeshore Chinooks in Mequon, WI.
With temperatures in the 60s for first pitch, it will be warmer for the start of a Friday-Saturday series. Eddy Morgan's Lakeshore Chinooks (12-10) enter just a half game ahead of the Bullfrogs (11-10) in the South Division standings.
Bullfrogs Reverse RISP Woes
Ryan Donovan (Hofstra) guided Green Bay to a win last night over the Duluth Huskies after he belted a grand slam in the fourth inning, the go ahead runs in a 6-2 victory. Along with Danny Rosenbaum's (Louisville) 2-out, 2 RBI base hit in the 9th inning, it was a welcomed retort to a showing on Wednesday night in which the Bullfrogs stranded eight runners in scoring position.
Per usual, the pitching got the job done against a Duluth team that entered with a team batting average over .260. Alex Martinez (De Anza) though he did not steer the smoothest course, left the game after five innings, two runs, and two strikeouts.
And when Luke VanLanen (Valparaiso) entered early in the sixth inning, everyone knew it was all business for the Bullfrogs trying to snap a two game losing skid. VanLanen (1st NWL/10APP) exited after a shutout inning, Jake Stolley (Northwestern) threw two scoreless frames, for Jeremy Graf (Flagler) who put up another zero in the ninth.
Green Bay enters the pair with Lakeshore a changed team not just from a bullpen standpoint, but also offensively. Shortstop Mikey Duarte (UC-Irvine) and Danny Rosenbaum (Louisville) are new pieces with invaluable experience in major college baseball.
And outfielder, Logan Taylor (Louisville), is 9-for-18 with four runs over his last five games, as the Bullfrogs pickups over the last week have assured their legitimacy as a contender in the South Division.
Not to mention, the defensive alignment for the Bullfrogs has made them more error free than ever. They did not have any errors yesterday in a win over Duluth, and have not had more than two errors in a game since June 12th.
The last time the Bullfrogs started a series at Lakeshore, they scored a season high 12 runs game one and forced six Chinooks errors.
Slotted into the starting rotation for the second time, Sam Brunner (Dayton), went three scoreless in a win on Monday in Wausau. He's a second-year Bullfrog and has a 1.54 ERA in 11 2/3 IP in 2015. That does not yet include the suspended game with St. Cloud in May in which he pitched six scoreless innings with nine strikeouts.
Lakeshore Brings In New Bats
The Chinooks have been graced by the presence of new arrivals including Kyle Fiala (INF/Notre Dame), Colby Fitch (C/Louisville), and Anthony Massicci (Canisius). All of these players did not compete against the Bullfrogs in late May.
Fiala has gone 12-for-34 with seven runs in nine games with the Chinooks. He's on a five-game hit streak including a 3-for-4 game with a pair of runs scored on June 17th against the Woodchucks. He led the Fighting Irish with a .301 AVG and .394 OBP.
Fitch, in only four games, is 5-for-11 with three runs and four walks. And Massicci has an 8-for-24 mark to begin his Northwoods League campaign with six runs scored.
Pitching tonight for the Chinooks is Brian Keller (RHP/UW Milwaukee) who brings in a 1-2/5.62ERA/24H/16IP against the Bullfrogs. Over his last two starts, Keller has tossed 12IP/3ER in games at Madison (06/12) and Wisconsin Rapids (06/04). But in each of his three stats, he's let up seven hits or more.
Lakeshore has split their last two series against the Woodchucks and Rafters. The Bullfrogs have won five of their last seven contests.
Single game tickets are on sale now. Visit www.greenbaybullfrogs.com to purchase tickets. The Bullfrogs' business hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
