R-Phils come from behind, beat Baysox

Bowie, MD- The Reading Phillies scored four runs in the eighth inning to claim a come from behind victory, winning 5-4 in Eastern League action. The Baysox lost a three-run lead after winning the first three games of a five-game series that will conclude on Thursday at 11:05 a.m.

The Baysox (52-46) led 4-1 after seven innings, before the Phillies (43-53) strung together four consecutive hits and had six straight runners reach base against Bowie's Scott Rice (5-5) who picked up the loss. Despite giving up two runs on four hits over two innings, Reading's Craig Hiles (1-1) was credited with the victory. Martire Franco worked an efficient ninth inning to pick up his sixth save.

Rice rolled through the seventh retiring all three batters before giving up three-straight singles to start the eighth. Kevin Barker than doubled home Ryan Fleming for Phillies first run of the inning. With first base open, Rice walked EL home run leader Ryan Howard on eight pitches before being replaced by Craig House. House got John Castellano to pop up to the first baseman who dropped the ball for an error in foul ground. Castellano took advantage of the mistake and drove in Phelps on a single. House lost control of the situation with a wild pitch that allowed Barker to score and Howard to move to third. Ruiz then drove in Howard for the winning run on a sacrifice fly, which should have ended the inning but instead led to an unearned run for the win.

Walter Young got things going early for Bowie driving in the first two Baysox runs in an outstanding four-for-four performance. Young had two doubles, two RBIs and two singles while also scoring in the seventh. Young raised his season average to .260 and reached base all five times when he walked in the eighth.

Baysox starter Brian Forystek allowed only one run over six innings on seven hits. Forystek struck out seven but was benefited most by three Baysox double plays over the first five innings. Reading's starter Keith Bucktrot gave up 11 hits over five innings, which resulted in only two runs as the Baysox left 13 runners on base.

After a slow start the Phillies got hits from every one of their hitters and ended the night only one hit shy of the Baysox' 15 hits. Reading was more effective leaving only six runners on base on 14 hits. Michael Huggins again had three hits for Bowie. Almost 10,000 people came out to Prince George's Stadium on Reading night. Thursday's projected starters are RHP Dave Crouthers for Bowie and LHP Kevin Dougherty for Reading.
