TONIGHT'S GAME: The first of a four game series and the fifth of 16 meetings, the first of eight at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The Braves are 1-3 vs. the Bulls. Game three of a six game road trip (Richmond is 1-1). The Braves were 9-7 vs. the bULLS last season, 5-3 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. This is the 10th of 48 games vs. South Division opponents, Richmond is 4-5 vs. the South; the fourth of 24 road games vs. South Division opponents (Richmond is 2-1). Braves are 60-74 vs. the Bulls all-time. The Braves are third in the South, 13 and a half games behind first place Charlotte. Durham is second in the South, 10 games back of the Knights.
SUNDAY'S GAME: Four Tides pitchers held visiting Richmond at bay to propel Norfolk to a 5-2 victory Sunday at Harbor Park. The Tides bullpen blanked the Braves for four innings to give the Tides a split of the series. Jason Scobie gave up seven hits over five innings, while striking out five and walking four. Tim Lavigne (1-1) picked up the win in two perfect innings of relief. Juan Perez and Heath Bell each pitched one scoreless inning, with Bell earning his seventh save for the Tides (17-18). Norfolk took a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI single by Chase Lambin. Anderson Hernandez had an RBI single in the fifth, Sandy Martinez and Lavigne hit run-scoring singles in the sixth and Jose Offerman scored on a wild pitch by Richmond reliever Peter Moylan in the seventh. Martinez and Tagg Bozied both had three hits in the win, with Bozied crossing the plate twice. Richmond starter Ricardo Rodriguez (2-3) allowed four runs on nine hits over six innings. He fanned two and walked one. Kelly Johnson lifted a solo home run in the third and Carlos Mendez slapped an RBI double in the fifth for the Braves.
REHAB CENTRAL: Three Atlanta Braves have been assigned to Richmond on rehab assignments: LHP Horacio Ramirez, LHP Chuck James, and OF Kelly Johnson. A fourth Atlanta Brave, LHP Macay McBride, was with Richmond on a rehab assignment earlier this season.
HELLO MR. SMITH?: RHP Travis Smith has been designated for assignment by Atlanta. He must clear waivers before he can be re-assigned to Richmond. The 72 hour waiver period for Smith will end Wednesday. The Braves active roster is now 22 (11 pitchers, two catchers, five infielders, four outfielders) plus the three rehab players. Richmond has had nine players earn promotions to Atlanta. The Braves have made 47 roster moves since opening day.
CRUNCHING NUMBERS: Scott Thorman has a five game hitting streak (11-25 .440). Jamal Strong's five game hitting streak ended Sunday. The Braves have 21 steals in their last 14 games. They stole 16 bags in their first 30 games. Braves pitchers are 5-18 at the plate (.278) with an RBI and SB. Braves pinch hitters are 1-14 (.071).
ON THE LEADER BOARD: Kevin Barry is eighth in the IL in ERA. Wes Timmons is 10th in batting average (.316). Timmons is third in the league in on base percentage (.428). Scott Thorman is third in hits with 51. Richmond is third in the IL in fielding percentage. The Braves are third in total chances.
