Columbus Clippers News Release

It all started in 1883 with the Columbus Buckeyes. That season, the Buckeyes had a handsome pitcher named Frank Mountain, whom the girls of Columbus adored. In Victorian Days, woman did not go out in public unescorted. So on days Mountain pitched, the team let ladies in free. The promotion was a huge success!

Mountain became one of the best pitchers of his generation. The right-hander won 49 major league games for Columbus in 1883-84 and his matinee idol looks packed the stands.

In 1884, Mountain developed a sore shoulder when he altered his pitching motion after his knee was dislocated by a line drive. His arm became so lame, he would take electrical shocks from a battery in order to be able to lift his arm above his waist to pitch. Mountain retired after 1885. Many believed it was due to a bad arm.

In the spring of '85, Frank married beautiful Sarah Hosey The young Mrs. Mountain didn't like the way the girls in Columbus fawned over her fiancée and made it perfectly clear, "Frank, It's either me or baseball." Despite tempting offers from Connie Mack, Mountain stayed home and became an assistant fire chief in Schenectady, New York. Frank and Sarah lived happily ever after.

Columbus' first promotion cost them their top pitcher but we continued to have "Ladies Day" to this day! So ladies... just print off the coupon below and tonight be the "Belle of the (Base)Ball" at The Coop! Enjoy!
