Quick hitters: week six
March 3, 2005 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release
WELCOME TO NEU ORLEANS: Through their first 21 regular-season games under head coach MIKE NEU, the New Orleans VooDoo are tied for the second best start in AFL history. The best start belongs to the Detroit Drive, which was established in 1988, and went 16-5 in their first 21 games. Entering Week 6, the VooDoo are 4-1 on the season and 15-6 in their first 21 games as a franchise. The only other team to go 15-6 in their first 21 games is the Nashville Kats who did it from 1997-98.
THE ROAD TO LAS VEGAS STARTS AT 4-1: Entering Week 6, four teams have a 4-1 record (Dallas, Georgia, Orlando, New Orleans), and New York can improve to 4-1 with a win Sunday. In 2004, five teams began the season 4-1 and four went on to win their sixth game. Of the five teams who started last season at 4-1, four finished the season with an 11-5 record and advanced to the postseason. Three of those four teams made it to the semifinal round of the playoffs including San Jose, who went on to win ArenaBowl XVIII.
WINNING WAYS: Since the start of the 2000 season, only three teams in the AFL have recorded 50-or-more regular-season wins. Two of those teams meet this Sunday when the defending ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats (1-3) travel to TD Waterhouse Centre to take on the Orlando Predators (4-1) at noon ET on NBC. Over the last six seasons, the SaberCats have won 59 games while the Predators have won 52. Arizona is the only other team to crack the 50-win mark over the last six seasons (53).

San Jose WR/DB BARRY WAGNER (6-3, 225, Alabama A&M) is the only player to reach that milestone. Hammond also needs .5 tackle to become the third player in AFL history to record 600 tackles. Orlando DS DAMON MASON (5-9, 175, Southwest Louisiana) became the second player to reach the 600-tackle plateau earlier this season. Wagner is the all-time tackle leader with 688.
