AFL honors five players with monthly awards for February

NEW YORK – Dallas Desperados wide receiver/defensive back WILL PETTIS, New Orleans VooDoo quarterback ANDY KELLY, Colorado Crush defensive specialist RASHAD FLOYD, Georgia Force offensive specialist TROY BERGERON and Los Angeles Avengers kicker REMY HAMILTON have been named U.S. Army Ironman, Offensive Player, ADT Defensive Player, Rookie, and Kicker of the Month, respectively, for the month of February of the 2005 season.

U.S. ARMY IRONMAN: Pettis (6-0, 200, Midwestern State), now in his third AFL season, averaged 145 all-purpose yards per game while the Eastern-Division leading Desperados have earned a 4-1 record to open the season. In five games, Pettis amassed 725 all-purpose yards (5th, AFL), becoming the first Dallas player in team history to surpass the 5,000-career mark. He also scored six touchdowns and a two-point conversion in that time. He hauled in 27 receptions for 283 yards and five touchdowns. Pettis also returned 24 kickoffs for 404 yards and had one missed field-goal return for 15 yards. Defensively, Pettis recorded 11.0 total tackles to go along with four pass breakups, two interceptions and one fumble recovery. This marks the second time that Pettis has earned an AFL monthly award.

OFFENSIVE: Kelly (6-3, 220, Tennessee), now in his 12th AFL season, completed 153-of-221 (69.2%) passes for 1,569 yards, 32 touchdowns, three interceptions and a 119.9 passer rating, while the AFLWA's No. 1-ranked VooDoo went 4-1 to open 2005. Kelly, who earned Offensive Player of the Week honors in Weeks 2 and 3, leads the AFL with in attempts, completions, completion percentage, passing yardage and touchdown passes. This marks the first time that the former Volunteer has earned an AFL monthly award.

ADT DEFENSIVE: Floyd (5-9, 180, Portland State), now in his fourth AFL season, recorded 51.5 tackles (No. 1, AFL), 11 pass breakups, one forced fumble and one interception to help the Crush to a 3-2 record and the lead in the Central Division. Floyd, who has earned ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors in four of the Crush's five games this season, was named Defensive Player of the Week for his effort last week against Los Angeles (February 27) when he tallied an AFL single-game record 17.5 total tackles, including a tackle for loss, and three pass breakups. Floyd is on pace for 164.8 tackles this season, which would shatter his own AFL single-season tackle record (123.0, 2004). This marks the second time that the former Viking has earned an AFL monthly award.

ROOKIE: In his first five AFL contests, Bergeron (6-2, 190, Middle Tennessee State), the AFL's youngest player at 21, is No. 2 among AFL scorers with 90 points. He has collected a League-leading 43 receptions for 532 yards (No. 3 overall) and 15 touchdowns (No. 2), recording three touchdown catches in each game this season and helping the Force (4-1) into a four-way tie for the top record in the AFL. The former Blue Raider is third among League leaders in all-purpose yards (914) and has returned 20 kickoffs for 382 yards. Bergeron is on pace to set a new AFL single-season record for most receiving touchdowns with 48 (record is 46, held by four players), as well as the same record by a rookie (42, held by EDDIE BROWN, Albany, 1994). This marks the first time that Bergeron has earned an AFL award.

KICKER: Hamilton (6-1, 193, Michigan), now in his eighth AFL season, has been near perfect in 2005, hitting 15 of 16 field-goal attempts, including a long of 50 yards, and 27-for-29 on extra points as the Avengers started the season 3-2. He leads all kickers in scoring with 72 points (tie-7th overall). Hamilton, who also earned Offensive Player and U.S. Army Ironman of the Game honors this season, is credited with 4.0 tackles and one fumble recovery. This marks the second time that the former Wolverine has earned an AFL monthly honor.
