Quebec's 5-Run Seventh Proves to be the Difference in 9-6 Win
June 14, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release
The seventh inning has been far from kind to the Tornadoes this season and that trend continued Thursday afternoon. Quebec rallied from two separate deficits and put the Tornadoes away with a five-run seventh inning to knock off the Tornadoes 9-6 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.
Quebec had just two hits in the five-run inning but plated every runner that reached base. The Capitales walked three times in the inning, stole three bases and used a wild pitch and a three-run home run from Rene Leveret to blow the game wide open.
Johnny Welch hit his fourth home run is as many days for the big hit of the day for the Tornadoes. The former Pittsfield Colonial crushed a two-run, home run over the left field to plate Brandon Pinckney and gave Worcester a temporary 4-2 lead. Cameron Monger went 2-for-4 with two single and added a walk and two runs scored. While Chris Torres added two hits and a run scored while playing seven inning behind the plate and pitching the final two frames. Justin Wiley earned his first career professional win going six and two-third innings allowing four runs on five hits. The Iona College graduate struck out four and recovered from allowing a run in the first to earn the win.
Kevin Cooper was the tough luck loser. After pitching three scoreless innings, the righty allowed single runs in the fourth and fifth and was charged with three of the five runs that scored in the seventh. Matt McDonald allowed two inherited runners to score and was charged with two runs of his own in a third of an inning. Worcester jumped out to a 2-0 lead with runs in the first and the third. Both times Cameron Monger singled to lead off the inning and came into score on fielder's choices that were both slightly misplayed by the Quebec defense.
After Quebec tied the score with single runs in the fourth and the fifth inning, Worcester grabbed the lead right back in the bottom half of the fifth. Brandon Pinckney walked with one out and Welch muscled a ball over the fence in left field to make it 4-2 Tornadoes. But the lead would not last for long. In the fateful seventh, Cooper allowed a single to Patrick D'Aoust and then walked Paul Karmas to start the inning. Seth Boyd followed with a sac bunt to move the runners up and Jeff Helps hit a sacrifice fly to bring Quebec to within 4-3. Josh Colafemina worked a walk to end Cooper's appearance and bring McDonald to the mound. McDonald issued a wild pitch to tie the game and then walked Steve Brown to put runners at first and second. With a full count, Leveret crushed a pitch well over the left field fence to cap off the five-run inning and put Worcester away.
Quebec would go on to add a single run in the eight and ninth to bring their lead to 9-4.
While Worcester managed to load the bases with no outs in the ninth inning, Monger grounded into a double play that plated Torres, but brought the Tornadoes down to their final out. Pinckney kept the rally alive with an RBI single to make it 9-6 but Jerod Edmondson struck out to end the game.
The Tornadoes will take to the road for a seven-game roadtrip starting Friday with a 7:00 matchup with the Rockland Boulders. Phil Negus will make the start for the Tornadoes.
