Qualls shuts down, shuts out Diablos

Round Rock Express News Release
After failing to get out of the fifth inning, the hopes for Chad Qualls were starting to drift. However, that all changed Friday night. Qualls threw a complete game shutout and the Round Rock Express finally rewarded a strong start to defeat the El Paso Diablos, 5-0, in front of a July 4th crowd of 10,778 at Cohen Field.
Qualls had given up 18 runs in his last three starts, but was a completely different pitcher against the Diablos. Qualls struck out a career high 11 and allowed only four hits in moving to 4-8.
After failing to reward outstanding starts from Nick Roberts, Greg Powell and D.J. Houlton on the last homestand, the Express got started early for Qualls. Chris Burke led off the game with his second home run of the season off of Casey Daigle. Jacques Landry gave Round Rock its final runs with his fourth homer with the Express in the third.
Daigle, the Texas League's leader in wins, took the loss to fall to 9-8.
Both teams move to 8-8 and remain three games behind first place San Antonio. Round Rock will return home for an eight-game series with Midland and the Missions starting Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
